Opinion on hatchlings....

I am trying to figure out what is going on with these guys and wanted to get some opinions here. These are from an amelanistic female x striped motley male het anerythristic. What do you think these guys are? Notice the lack of or reduced belly pattern.

Hey Ron. Don't know what to tell you. If I hatched snakes like that, I would still call them normals, as you'd expect to get from that pairing. I realize that in recent years some motleys have been popping up with a certain amount of belly checks. Heck, I think the look is actually pretty cool. But if I order a motley, and it arrives with belly checks, even to a lesser degree than the hatchling you've shown, I'm going to be disappointed/mad. I guess you could label them "possibly mot", but I don't think that's going to improve their price/marketability.

Regardless, that's a beautiful little hatchling. :)

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely be selling them as normals I was just curious if anyone else had seen this before. They really do have beautiful colors and patterns and they were HUGE! Some weighed as much as 12 grams right after hatching.

Yeah, I'm running into that with some hatchlings out of hets for motley (banded variety - often a culprit in motleys with checks), diffusion, and charcoal. That hatchling you've pictured is about as "tweener" as you can get, lol. I, too, would sell it as a normal and tell the new owner the story. It may very well be genetically a motley, but it won't be known without breeding trials.

Very cool belly pattern and pretty hatchling.

Good to see you on this forum as well. :D

Thanks for the welcome Connie!

About half the clutch turned out like this and the other half look "normal". I will say these are the prettiest normals I have ever produced. I plan on keeping a few to breed to see what happpens. :)

This is the first year I have seen a couple like that. It was kind of a surprise. Don S. told me he started seeing some that were obvious motleys with just a FEW belly checks a few years ago. And then I started noticing them the following year. But I never saw one that had as many checks as yours does - until this year. As Connie said, I am just selling them as normals, and the buyer may be getting a bonus. It is interesting, but not enough for me to raise them up and do trial breedings.

I have one that has one straight belly check all the way across in about 3 places. It looks really weird. I can definitely understand you not wanting to try and breed them out but since I am just starting my collection back after a 5 year hiatus, I am keeping a few to see what happens (much the chagrin of my wife). Combine this with my supposed ghost motley male turning out to be a pastel colored anery het hypo, my clutches were all suprises this year. I still have 2 clutches incubating so maybe I will pop out the illusive leucistic corn this year! :shrugs:

DIBBS! :p I call dibbs if you get one. ;)

Yeah, I've got some banded motleys that I know are motleys that have a few belly checks on them. Seems like when you see it with motley, you get those 1 scale long thin checks with them, like you see towards the front of your belly picture above. "Motleys always have totally plain bellies" just isn't going to hold true, especially when we start comboing it with other pattern-influencing traits/selection pressure/genes. Gotta have something to keep us on our toes.

:grin01:

I guess we will be keeping Serpwidget on his toes wont we??? lol...:bang:

At this rate he might be doing a biannual update just to keep up with all the new morphs popping out.

And if the "illusive one" pops up, you will have first dibbs, I promise! :santa:
