Opinions on other breeds of snakes

Hi again.

I posted last night about my baby corn passing away. I am going to take some time to grieve, but I need to start saving for my next snake. It'll take me a bit to save up and I want to research other breeds in the meantime.

I saw some little ball python's the other day and they were adorable. I've never considered them before. I always thought they were slightly 'scary' looking but I've heard they are (usually) very good-natured snakes.

From my experience with my corn, they are pretty delicate. I was always afraid to handle her too much and it was hard because she was so cute and friendly that I wanted to handle her all the time (except after feeding)!

I'd love some opinions from you guys. Corns are ridiculously hard to find around here except at the one Petsmart (and they are seriously overpriced, $120+) There is no breeder in my Province and I'm leery about shipping one.

However, other species of snakes are readily available here...

There's are definitely corn snake breeders in Ontario. I'd see if there's any local reptile groups in Sarnia or Ontario because they might know of places.

Yeah, there's a bunch of good corn snake breeders in Ontario. I got my gold dust female from one that was at our reptile expo in MB last October, they were called Superior Reptiles. http://www.superiorreptiles.ca/#!
Also, corn snakes really aren't that delicate, but pet store snakes often aren't the most healthy, which might be why you had so much trouble. Shipping also isn't nearly as scary as you might think. I had my vanishing stripe female shipped from Crazy Colubrids in SK, and it was a great experience, no issues at all, and I couldn't be happier with her. :)

I've looked at Crazy Colubrids and they have amazing snakes. I contacted them and they said they'll even have Blizzards this spring, which is my dream snake!! I'm definitely going to get one of those.

I will check our Superior! Thank you!!

I really don't want another baby, though... and both breeders have hatchlings. I don't know if I can handle another baby lol

I like my ball pythons. They are easy going snakes, not as active as corns. But if you dont get the husbandry down they can have problems just like any exotic animal, so do your research.

I wouldn't rule out hatchlings just yet, they're not nearly as fragile when you get them from a good breeder. You should contact both breeders though, you never know, they might have some juveniles or yearlings they're thinking of selling and haven't listed on their websites yet. :)

I have! Thank you so much. I wish we had a reptile expo closer to me. I'm sure I could find a perfect snake there! But, this is a great start.

I've gotten 2 of my corns from a local breeder as tiny babies and they did great. One is even kinked and he is a little machine.

I have a western hognose, a rubber boa and a ball python also. My ball is a rescue who was used for kids parties and educational events and he is sweet as pie.

I am sorry for your loss. I had a little baby butter corn who was so sweet and he passed away a few days after I got him, I was so bummed out :(

I'm sorry, too. That's rough :(

I've actually decided I'm getting a ball python next!! I'm super excited. I got to hold one the other day and just fell in love. I'm in the process of setting up my tank for one, since they need a different environment than my corn had, and I'm going to a breeder in 10 days!

I will be getting another corn once spring/summer hits and they can be shipped. But, for now, I'm going with a bp and I'm super excited!

Get a carpet... Like corns as for being hardy, but slightly larger....
Much more interesting than Balls/Royal pythons IMO as they actually do something rather than just hide....

And they make great display snakes... Sort of a cross between GTP/ETB and corns....
