Yet again I find myself at another reptile expo. Was in high hopes of finding a spotted python only to hear the what was likely the only one at the show was sold only about an hour before I asked the breeder....ARGH!!! Ok so I walked around and started to make a list in my head, Macklotts hmmm...not for $145, second macklotts about a year older for $80...possibly.....nother BP for breeding at $25....nah...nothing really fun about breeding normals, let alone there are enough normal BP's in the world...so nixed that idea. then I spotted a table with 4 Children's Pythons. Antaresia Childreni it was. I looked at all 4. All males for $60 ea. Sold! picked out the most distinctly colored as all looked quite healthy and active, talked to the breeder who said they have all eaten a frozen thawed pinky twice. I have the card at home as I cannot remember the breeder's name/company. So than I drop it off at home in my quarantine tank and head to PEtco/walmart/petland to get everything. $120 on supplies and cleaning a 10 gallon and he's started his 5 day adaptation period. on Friday I will be offering a f/t pinky. And may snap a few candid pics tonight if not late sunday early next week I'll have pics posted.

And it being male is a kinda strange for me. almost all of my animals are female, and almost every first animal of a species is female!

Still up in the air on a name. Being he is from Australia, I'll probably stick with an Aussie themed name.

On the list thus far are: Bloke, Sydney, Astral, Berko, Digger, Larrikin, Troppo, Irwin.

I think that my new collection my be all Aussie herps. I have my BP, but she is my baby, so not letting her go anytime soon. I am contemplating an Agama, and possibly a few other Spotted (still!) Anthills assuming I can find one... and one or two others.

I saw Children's when I was there- little babies!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who can spend over a hundred dollars setting a baby up in a ten gallon...

I still need a second hide (though I had one at home) and a thermostat. Doing everything manually right now with my homeade rheo and a probe therm! And I still need to order pinkies from rodentpro. Bought a small tub of frozen pinkies at petco but being its a smaller python I can easily use up 25 pinkies on one snake. Its been almost a year since I have had to use pinkies! let alone order bulk frozen!

Just read that in captivity Children's pythons are known to 20-30 years. Wouldn't have expected that from such a small animal. They are really easy to keep. very similar to a BP in husbandry. Might start looking for a female....dun dun dunnnnnn.

I promise you'll get pics soon!!!!

But he now has a tentative name!

Wonambi

The 5 metre snake Wonambi naracoortensis was first described from fossils at Naracoorte, and was the first extinct snake to be described from Australia.

This snake would have killed by wrapping its body around its prey and slowly tightening the coils until the animal suffocated. Its skull was comparatively small and it would have taken small to medium sized prey, mostly mammals. Wonambi also did not have a flexible jaw like its current day ancestors so it prey would likely have been small possum like mammels that existed in the same region around the time of this prehistoric serpent.

Wonambi naracoortensis died out within the last 50,000 years.

The pics as promised!

Ok so the name keeps changing!

Meet Feric my new boy!

Children's Python (Antaresia Childreni)
6 weeks old

Ok yesterday was his 5th day with me and I was nervous as ever as I opened the freezer to get a pinky out to thaw. Then I fed my bearded dragon her weekly was worm treat in one of my feeding tubs. then I put her back and placed the freshly thawed pinky in the feeding tub (def the max size my new boy could handle too!). My thinking is the scent of my beardy in the tub might insite him to chow down on the pinky. well I don't think it mattered. He explored the tub climbed everywhere he could reach. until he found this strange pink thing.....he opened up like someone taking the first bite of a large sandwich and slowly ate. no strike no coil just standard actions for a snake who's only ever had f/t pinkies. I'd have taken pics but didn't want to harrass him in the least to ensure a good first feeding, but he did butt munch the pinky. He is still no bigger than a hatchling corn.

Which are your new kids?

The stripe babies! Lavender, Avalanche and Bloodred.

Lavender and Bloodred shed, too.

Lavender Calli is starting to come out and explore a bit. Ruby doesn't ever come out when I'm around, at least. Pepper is out all the time and gets handled on his non-digesting days for little bits of time. He's a sweet one.

Outstanding!

Feric likes to perch at the top of his cage and hang down. But in the wild they are known for perching on cave walls and eating microbats that fly by so it's to be somewhat expected.

I had a dream last night, and I blame you. I dreamed I had a viv with four tiny snakes in it. One was a CP. The others were various gray snakes- corns maybe? I was worried about the CP eating the others. I don't know why I was cohabbing them.

My apologies!

But you were dreaming about snakes, so it couldn't have been all bad!

Ok so tonight is feeding night yet again, and maybe I'll actually remember to take pics this time!
