Ostrich Wranglin'

Ostrich eggs are readily available, and you could probably get one on ebay or from an ostrich farm for pretty cheap. I have three now (you get one as a gift each semester you help out there).

I'm still unaware as to what's going on with her. The metamucil is being used because she was having bloody stool. Currently, that's gone away, but we're still treating her just in case. As far as eggs go, it's just starting to be breeding season now...so it's doubtful. I felt around her vent a few days ago and felt nothing.

I'm hoping the vet will get there soon. A vet runs the place, but she just recently had surgery on her foot and can't make the long, long walk out to the pen. I really think she should have been looked at sooner, but what can you do? Vitals seem to be good at least.

I'll definitely keep y'all posted.

Huh, I'll have to look up ostrich farms (I don't know how I'd feel about ordering an ostrich egg via eBay).

Hopefully it's nothing too serious. Bloody stool can't be a good sign. Also best wishes for a speedy recovery for your vet! You should hook her up with one of those golf carts.

Lol unfortunately I think it'd take more like a 4 wheeler to get her out there. The mud out there is crazy with all the rain we've been having and with deer trampling around.

Cripes! Well, maybe you can train one of the other ostriches to carry her around? They look like they're easy to tame.

Poor girl, I hope she's feeling better soon. :( Though....even with her not being able to get up, I dunno if I'd want to try wrestling meds into her!

Ashley, for a long time it was the in thing to raise ostriches. They were selling for big dollars and people were talking about selling the meat and the leather etc. Has all of that died off and a thing of the past. What has happened to the ostrich market?

Wade, I dunno about the market in general, but last year I stopped at a store that sold nothing but ostrich meat, jerky, leather, feathers, eggs, bones, etc. The place was pretty busy too. So apparently there is still some demand. :)

Aw man, it didn't happen to be on the east cost, did it?

No, it was in Southern California somewhere. I'm racking my brain, but it was a random stop during a looooong road trip and I had the flu at the time so I was totally zoned out.

Oh man, I'm totally on the case now. I read somewhere Whole Foods has them sometimes.

WOW, birds for $400 and eggs for $45. I remember about 15 years ago they were selling birds for $10K.

Wow..I had no idea ostriches used to go that much. Crazy. They breed like crazy, so no wonder the price went down.

Anyway, here's today's update!

Apparently, the doctor had been out to see her. And there's no diagnosis. Unfortunately, it will probably only be found out during necropsy, which we're of course trying to avoid.

Woody trying to get up more though, and she's resting on her hocks a lot more as seen below. She also took her metamucil by hand so no face stuffing!

We did have a freeze last night though (this weather is killing us wimpy Texans!), and I thought I'd share some pictures. The ice on the water troughs was so thick (perhaps an inch or so) that I could stand on them! We had to bust through them with hammers and feet!

Frozen mud! See the little deer prints?

We even decided to bring the tortoises inside. They'd been in burrows with heat lamps in a barn, but we thought they needed extra warmth. They're not excited about the move and don't seem to care for their breakfast!

I'll be going back over there Monday evening, so hopefully I'll have more info then.

Ugh, God I hope it warms up more by the time I start. NOT EXCITED.

But yay for Woody improving...a little. Go, Woody, GO!

I know, Jessica..it's awful here! I hope it's warm by tomorrow.

Yeah, people don't take the pictures. And then when the years past, those people cry for the photo memories they'll never have.

Just an update on Woody:

She's definitely still with us and getting fiesty! She was hissing up a storm at me this morning and ate her breakfast like a champ. Unfortunately she still hasn't stood up, but she's definitely still trying to.

Yes we're definitely hoping for the best. We're just worried that if she doesn't get up soon, she may never. And that just seems like a horrible life for her to live. We'll see.
