This pic is looking into the room where all of our mice & rats are. The tall rack has 10 tubs with 1.3 adult mice and their various sized litters.

I also have 1.2 black hooded rats. I am VERY excited because in the past, I`ve had awful luck with breeding rats. But, right now I have 2 awesome Mama rats. One Mama had 9 fat lil pups about 10 days ago and the other one just had 8 more. Even the Male is being great with the pups....I am very happy....

Breeding Rats

Hi Rayna,

Well, instead of breeders, I think we have three new pet rats.... Yes, I still plan on using them for breeding, but we have become so attached to the little critters in such a short time that they are going to be mainly pets.lol Needless to say, my fear of rats is gone... I can't believe how smart the little buggers are. We have one female that we named Lilly and she is so smart. Allison, my daughter, tells her to jump, she jumps, and will call her and she comes to her.The other female hasn't really a name yet as we can't decide on one, but the male is a black hooded rat who's name is Gus.Lilly and Gus are rats that have the big dumbo ears, where the other female has ordinary ones. They are some cute. They are still babies as I didn't want a rat that was too big as I wanted to be able to tame them.... They are so cool...

I've got them in a 10 gal aquarium right now, but will change that to a 20 gal tonight. I have been looking for a decent size rat cage, but can't seem to find one, so I will probably build one out of either 1/4 or 1/2 inch mesh. I thought about putting them in Ari's cage and moving him to the 20 gal tank, but I fear that they would chew their way out.

I used these type of tubs for my rats, the deep ones allow enough air flow and they aren't hard to refit. I kept the rats I fell in love with in a rat cage. Unfortunately I fell in love with to many of them to keep breeding them. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111723

Buliding a cage is a good idea. I have an awesome rat cage, BUT babies can get out of it. So, It`s no good for breeding rats....LOL. Yeah- Rats make great pets & I agree, they are extremely smart!

I have kept rats as pets only since 2003. I won't even keep a snake that needs to eat them, I love them way too much to use them as food! Their only downfall is their heartbreakingly short lifespans.

One thing about them as pets, the more you put into them as far as attention and playtimes, the more you get back. And if they pee on you it is a gesture of affection, they are marking you and telling allllll the other ratties in the world that you belong to them!

I just buy f/t mice for my colubrids and avoid boids entirely!!

I just may end up selling the balls as I don't think I will be able to kill the rats either. They are so sweet and just love to be on us and getting lots of attention. I can't believe how friendly they are... we just brought them home on Saturday, but already we are attached to them... I put them in a 20 gal aquarium for now until I can design a big cage for them. I have checked online and at both pet stores here and most have too large of openings in the cages. I would be afraid of them getting out....

One time (after I had had my rats for a few months) I accidently left the cage door open....all night!!!
Well when I got up the next morning both boys were in their cage fast asleep. I don't think they ever left it!
With my ratties they are either in their cage or in the living room watching tv with me. I line the sofa with a waterproof table cloth underneath and pile sheets on top of that. They don't like being anywhere else, especially without me!
