Painted turtle rescue (Warning, graphic pic)

Wilder

Y HALO THAR
We saw this guy get hit by some morons on mopeds who decided riding around on the sidewalk was a grand idea. Since it was apparent their biggest concern was if the bike was damaged, we had a few choice words before bundling the turtle into a pet carrier and calling around to arrange a drop-off with the local turtle rehabilitator's husband. I'm going to email them tomorrow to see if there was anything they could do to help him. We were told they had gotten worse cases in, but it's hard to say either way with this one... so we'll see.

Just had to share since many folks here would understand feeling bad for a turtle. If I saw a turtle while riding around, I'd stop and get a good look at it because it's interesting, not make an effort to actually run over the poor thing. Some days I hate people.

Here's a pic of him, but be warned, it is a bit graphic:

I really hope they can patch that guy up! It's a shame what people will do because they are idiots; that, and there are actually people who think turtles can come out of their shells like in the cartoons.

Good Luck.

It takes all kinds...

I remember taking a walk one morning years ago when I spotted a Florida Pine Snake crossing the road. A true prize, I hurried to catch him. An oncoming motorist seeing me and the snake accelerated and swerved to hit the snake. Laughing all the way. I chucked my snake stick at him but missed.

At the Reptile Shack they received a Gopher Tortoise in similar shape. He is alive and well today. My guess is she can be patched; I just hope there is no muscle or internal damage.
Good Luck and please keep us informed.

awww, poor lil guy :(
i wish him a speedy recovery, and i'd make those motorists pay for his rehab, the jerks...

That happened to me once with a garter snake. I was walking home from school. A snake dashed across the road. I got stressed out and mentally (and vocally) hurried that snake across the double lines because I saw the oncoming car. He/she made it! And I breathed a sigh of relief. Then I watched in disbelief as the car swerved over the double yellow midline to purposely run over the snake. After that, I ran out into the road to get him/her. It was paralyzed half-way down died in my hands. I cried as 9th grader, apologized to him/her for humanity, and thus was born the end of my optmism for humanity. I realize now that the death of my optmism in humanity came about in a much more (relatively) innocuous way than for many young women, but it came about nonetheless.

Poor little guy :(
A few weeks I helped rescue a wild grass snake. Some kids had found it and were throwing rocks at it.
Why exactly?

It was like that when I was a nipper and trying to catch snakes and turtles. I actually got beat up after saving a snapping turtle from being stoned to death. I saw these kids throwing rocks at what I thought was a log and it was a huge snapper. I ran right through them and grabbed him by his tail and tossed him in the water as fast as I could. After that they started calling me all sorts of names and I am known to be 'verbally aggressive' so went right back at them. Then of course I got punched and that shut me up. :bang: I am more of a lover than a fighter. :grin01:

Anyway, even though the shell is cracked in this guy, it looks like it's only a small part of the shell itself. I bet he recovers. But please keep us all updated.

i dont understand people. i've seen people swerve and purposely hit animals crossing the road. you would think they wouldnt do this to a cat or dog, but no, they do it. why? do they get some satisfaction from killing something? is it like squashing a bug or swatting a fly to them?
we have a pond near our house and i've stopped many times to help the geese and the turtles get out of the road. there's a sidewalk on one side of the road. i've seen people in their big SUVs or trucks jump the curb so they can hit the geese or turtles that are on the sidewalk! thats just insane. why go through all that trouble? i think it would be easier to just get your fat behind out from behind the wheel and just beat the animal to death with a stick or just shoot it. whats the deal with having to kill things with their vehicles?

... because mean people suck.

Please let us know if the turtle makes it, Wilder.

Got an update on our turtle. It's a female, and full of eggs, which is the reason the rehabber felt she was by the road to begin with -- warmer place to lay the eggs. One of them was broken inside of her, and in a picture she sent you can actually see the yolk through the broken part of the shell.

They're worried she might lose one eye completely and possibly be blind in the other, but her leg isn't so badly injured that they feel she'll lose the use of it. The shell was able to be repaired. Overall, there's a good chance she'll make it. :)

I'll share the pictures she sent as soon as I get permission to. Now, let's just hope she can still use her other eye and that no infection sets in. Go, turtle, go! We're hoping for you.

The potential for a happy ending is a nice thing. :)

Kudos, Erika, for taking the time and effort into rescuing this lil' grrrl. :)

Grrrl. I'm so hood. ;)

regards,
jazz

Go turtle, GO!!

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for her speedy recovery.

We have masses of geese around here and at this time of year they can and do stop peak hour traffic when they make their waddley way accross the main roads!

The motorists are generally very respectful of them around here but the biggest problem is the dog owners who don't leash their dogs down at the parklands and the dogs get too excited by all the goslings to listen to the owners commands...very sad end for a number of babies...

that makes me wanna carry a gun on me...and if i ever see anyone hit a turtle on purpose or just cause they didnt see it...cause how can you miss something like that in the road...but i would shot there back tires out and then take a slege hammer and see how they like to be smashed up

There are so many sad stories in this thread...I did have a shed of hope for humans, but looking around here I think I lost it. I hope he recovers well anyway :)

I have seen a person stop at a cat. but once another person purposely went off road hit a snake and came back Who does that WHO!!???!!??!???!?!??!?! it survived.
