Paranoid? Or should I Worry?

King Crimson, my yearling or thereabouts hypo ate on Wednesday and shed on Thursday night. It wasn't a complete shed, it came off in three pieces, but no matter how high the humidity is he never sheds completely (my anery is in the same room under nearly identical conditions and she hasn't had a problem). Anyway, so he shed, and I gave him a bath to help with the last bit on his tail, and he felt funny. There's nothing wrong that I can see, his eyes are bright and his tongue is flicking, his vent is clean, but he just felt soft to me, like he wasn't trying to escape, which he always does in the bath. He still feels a little strange today, sort of squishy, for lack of a better word. But, like I said, he's still moving around his tank, thermoregulating, and all that. Should I be worried? Is this an emergency? My anery has been in contact with him recently for a photo shoot and she's showing no signs of anything being wrong.

Thanks so much,
Chelsea

I tend to trust my gut on things like this. If you know a snake well, then a change in muscle tone can indicate some sort of trouble brewing.

However what that might be, I'm afraid I can't tell you. I think this is your cue to keep a close eye out for other symptoms, just in case. If you've had high humidity in the tank as a whole rather than using a humid hide, then be on the lookout for signs of scale rot.

Can't think what else to advise at the moment.

I've experimented with humidity at various points, but i tend to keep it around 50% now since higher humidity doesn't make any difference. He is just...off. I mean, I am worried, but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do. There are no signs of scale rot, no breathing sounds, he's been eating and pooping. He is moving around the tank, at least from cool side to warm side. The temps are good... I am at a loss.

I know how that feels! The one of mine that sticks in my mind, I took to the vet for a checkup. He couldn't find anything. A couple of weeks later, she developed the visible symptoms of scale rot. Most of the time they're pretty good at hiding health issues.

I think all you can do is wait and see. With luck, he'll be back to normal shortly. He might just be feeling "off color".
