Persephone's Surprise

HerpsforU

Cornsnake Crazy
Checking on the snakies last night and opened up our Amel Het. Opal females box (Persephone) to find 9 eggs....after laying 18 eggs two and a half months ago....was never reintroduced to Dionysus (Amel Het. Opal Male). Only 4 of the eggs look good but we put all 9 in the incubator just in case.. Wish me luck, all of the first clutch (except one egg) went bad. From the looks of that hatchling I have an amel het. opal....here is a picture of her.

If the amel pictured is a product of amel het opal x amel het opal, then your amel hatchlings only have a 66% chance of being het for lavender (opal), they're not all het for opal.

Paris,

I'm sorry they went bad! I hope you get some opals in the second batch. My two from the amel het opal cross aren't eating and I don't think will make it. I have one more chance in the incubator right now. Let's start the chant....hatch out opal....hatch out opal....

:-offtopic

I see 66% listed with poss hets and I don't understand that number. Wouldn't it be 50% poss het opal? I don't see how you get 66% when the corn prog predictor states that 50% of the amels will be het opal and the other 50% wouldn't be. :shrugs:

The OP said that both parents were het Opal. Had only one parent been het Opal then it would have been 50%, but because both are het it is 66%.

Good question.

Q: What does 50% het or 66% het mean?
A: Both percentages reflect the statistical probabilty that each egg, not the clutch as a whole, will be some genotype xyz. If you breed two snakes that are both normals het amel together, the resulting statistical probabilty will be as follows: 1/4 amels, 1/4 normal, 1/2 normal het amel. Disregard the amels as they are showing the trait and cannot be het for it, and you are left with all normals, some het for amel and some not. Theoretically 1/2 out of 3/4 of the normals will be het for amel. 0.5 / 0.75 = 0.66667%.
The same holds true regarding 50% het. A normal x normal het amel will give all normal offspring, 50% being het for amelanism.

See what happens when you go to work

a whole conversation that I missed.

Thank you for pointing out that the hatchling is actually only possibly het. opal (I forgot to add that, I did see it in the predictor though.)

Okay so I am back to work for two more nights, on with the conversations.

Kathy thanks I hope yours start eating, I finally have everyone eating on their own, it took two feedings with mouse tail for the one that WOULD NOT EAT!!!!

Talk with you soon. See you in a month!
