Pet Stores Tick Me Off!

Rainey

Why can't I have more?
I went to this pet store here yesterday and was looking for some grape vine branches. The friggin guy, who thought he knew everything, pointed me to these synthetic things that were supposed to look like vines (I thought they looked ugly). But according to him, there was nothing better looking around.

I had no idea that they carried corns, but I saw a sign and asked him about them. He proceeded to treat me like an idiot even after I started to talk to him about genetics. SO then I started asking harder questions like if he actually knew what trait made his albino an albino (pretty easy question if you ask me). Then the prick started to talk down to me even more. He thought he knew everything, but I didn't hear a single true thing come from his mouth. I was so ticked when I left, he was so arrogant.

I would actually rather spend more money and buy stuff from anywhere else. He just lost himself a valuable customer! He could have made some good money off of me!

Sorry, I just had to vent!

Rainey, understandable....many times in a Petco or mom and pop shop have I run into the supposedly omnipotent sales person. Most of the time I'll just say thanks, I have no need for your help and walk away. Only once has a sales associate followed me around the store attempting to show off his knowledge. So I sat and quizzed him for 20 minutes...when he didn't believe my answers I merely picked up the appropriate book and flipped to a page. Poor kid had the humility to admit that maybe he didn't know it all and started flipping through the books.

In you case I would have asked to speak to the manager and told them that their employee was incredibly rude and that they lost a pricey sale as well as future business.

Yeah...

it's pretty sad how some (actually, quite a lot) of pet shops don't know a single thing about the animals, especially reptiles, that they sell. I think there should be tighter restrictions so only specialist shops can sell reptiles as too many of them don't care for the animals. And it's not just reptiles, either. Many pet shops don't even know how to properly care for the smaller animals and, if they do, they don't pass on the information to their customers.

You should say something to someone ... you know that the bloke is talking b:mad:ll:mad:cks, but his next customer may not!

Imagine if someone were to buy a Boa or something and he "forgot" to tell them that they grow! Or if they recommended puting an unshielded high-temp heating lamp in in the cage with a corn - not good.

Personally I'd write a letter (or visit) the manager and suggest that their staff get training (or at least read a book) on herpetology before they interact with customers. If you mention the RSPCA (or American equivalent) they may get scared.

You never know, they may even want you to do the training (£££s)

I actually travel out of my City to a suburb as the staff in their "Garden Centre" are very knowledgable on fish, reptiles, mamals, birds, and all the other pets they keep. Each section has a staff member who is trained in, and usually keeps, the particular pet. Everything they've said about snakes so far has been spot on :D

Good luck with whatever you do ...
