Petco Exception?(Read the whole thing!)

R.W.

Call me Richard
I know that among most serious/intelligent reptile enthusiasts, Petco is usually frowned upon, and with good reason. But I think the one only a block away from my house may be the one exception.

Let me start by saying that until just a few months ago, they had a reptile specialist who was actually a REPTILE SPECIALIST. You say:"Impossible, that can't be true!", but it is. She has been keeping reptiles herself for around twenty years and actually knows what she is doing. She is doing her best to change the way Petco does things and has given me and many other people great advice. Everyday should be out there misting, watering, feeding, cleaning, and anything else you could think of. All of the snakes were on aspen, with clean water always available, and with a hide. She also made sure that there was only on snake in each enclosure and was careful to warn people about the importance of doing so at home and of the quarantine of new snakes. She also made sure people knew about kings/milksnakes annoying habit of eating other snakes.

Unforunatley, she was recently transferred to another brand new Petco to get things off to a good start, which she has done a excellent job of, and the best part is, the petco she left has been following her example and taking good care of the animals! They may not be as knowledgeable as her, but they are better than any other pet store chain I've been to, and the animals are still being well taken care of.

Here is the nitty gritty. I have wanting some kind of kingsnake now for a while. They have one there now that is either a normal albino, or a lavender albino, since they are similar, I'm not sure which but I would'nt mind either one. I could use either as far as breeing goes and it is a gorgeous little snake.
They got it in back when she was still there and they have had it for over a year. It has grown a lot since then and you can tell just by looking at it that is well fed. Also in all the time it has been therre, I've never seen it have any bad sheds, always in one piece. The reason they have had trouble selling it is because it is their most expensive snake($150.00) and be cause the thing is Satan-Incarnate. If there is such a thing as an evil snake in this world, this is the one. It has a nasty attitude and bite like crazy, I learned that the hard way.:)

Yesterday I went in to buy some frozen rats and mice, looked at the snakes enclosure, as I so often have, and found myself shocked to see that it's price, along with a beautiul tangerine hondo's price, had been knocked down to $37! I asked one of the guys that works with the reptiles about it and he said the prices were lowered because they are dicontinuing alot of there reptiles and want to clear them out, and what with the snakes attitude, they thought they would have to get it pretty low. He said that the snake had no vet record because their animals only get a vet record if they get sick while they are in their care. He did say they could get a record of where the snake came from because they get all their snakes from the same place.

What do you think? This is the only petco I have ever seen that actually takes care of their reptile the right way, and I have found myself looking longingly at this snake many times. It looks to be in excellent condition(it has for over a year), and I will definitley get it checked by a vet and quarantine it, they also have a 30 day gaurantee.

I actually have the money for both the kingsnake and the milk( I've been wanting a tang hondo for a while too), I just wanted to see what ya'll thought before I bought anything.

I feel like your mind is already made up. The way you make it seem, I don't see why you would even question yourself. I hope that the snakes are still there when you get back.

She sounds like a great employee! Good story and hopefully others will follow her example (maybe if she speaks at a higher level, more might be done, nothing drastic, but things such as those you listed).

I say buy it, often 'aggressive' snakes can be 'tamed', and if you're getting it checked for parasites and quarantining it, then you're good to go.

Also, i forgot to add that I actually applied to Petco this past week as a "animal companion" for the reptiles section. And though I'm not a PRO, I know so much about the reptiles at the petcos that I've gone to, that if I were to actually have worked there (i got another job) I probably would've changed the reptile area a bit.

Get your but back there and get those babies! lol...It sounds like a great deal on some well cared for pets..Not all petcos are bad and I know this first hand..but I do know some of the bad ones first hand as well..I'm glad to hear that there are workers in the company that are trying to better their knowledge on reptile care :0) Good luck

Glad to hear some of the chain stores cleaned up around your area, because they havn't taken that advice out here.

I still wouldn't ever suggest a petco snake. Buy from a reputable breeder online and you know you get what you paid for.

The whole situation sounds a bit fishy, but then again, im used to the stores out here.

Either way, I think you should be the one to make the decision, and I hope you are happy with the one you make!

You have been watching that particular snake for some time now, and kind of "know" it already. You seem to know that it has been feeding well, and the behavior doesn't upset you (chances are he will tame down in time, but you can never be sure). So go ahead and get it - just check it over very well just before buying it, and satisfy yourself that it is still healthy and feeding.

Many stores will do "close outs" at much, much lower prices once they decide to get out of whatever hasn't sold. So go and get it (or both) right away before they are gone!

I say, he's stayed alive there for a year, so there is nothing genetically wrong to surprise you. Get him if you want to!

Thanks! My mind is made up.
One thing.

Assuming they are still there when I go back, I plan on putting the kingsnake in a 28qt sterilite. The milk however is smaller than the king. Its a juvenile, probably a yearling. Does 28qt sound too big for a snake that size, or should I use a 15qt?

If it were me, I'd use the 28qt for both, and just add extra hides for the smaller snake. Good luck to you with those 2.
