Pine for rats harmful?

Corn Snake Friendly
Hello Everyone,

I have a question, i just got my first pet rat. Im not sure if im gonna breed her or not. But i was wondering about the Kaytee Pine bedding and litter. I read that Pine shavings are bad/ harmful for rats/rodents. Should i stay clear from anything that says pine or cedar? Including Kaytee Pine bedding and litter? Thanks so much

Victoria

No pine or cedar.. The oils tend to create RI and other respitory problems..
Stay with the aspen or other hard wood shavings..

Stay with Aspen. It's a plus when you have all your animals on it. Plus I notice Pine has a bad hobit of sometimes creating tummy sores on rodents.

Cedar is a definite stay away from ... Pine on the other hand ...

The Kaytee pine bedding isnt too bad not too great either. It just has alot of fines. Aromatic oils in pine are bad, buying a pine that has been kiln dried will eliminate this problem. The next biggest problem with pine is "fines", horses are prone to RI's just like rodents so buying a pine bedding designed for horses will usually ensure a minimum of fines.

With only a few rodents aspen is a safer bet though.

From your post it sounds like you have just one rat.
You should keep rats in groups of 2 or more. Solo rats get lonely and tend to have behavioral problems.

Flagg who exactly are you talking to. It would be nice if you stated whom you were posting the comment to.

Ok. Your right. It does sound like they only have one rat. You should deffinatly get another rat so that female doesn't get lonely.

thanks guys, i am considering getting a second because i have been reading up on them and it all says to get more then one. They are very social animals and do get lonely. Shes my first rat so im learning as i go...thanks a bunch

Pine and cedar is a no-no if you want healthy rats!Aspen or Carefresh is good. However some rats can become allergic to Carefresh.I used to use it and only one of my rats became allergic to it, but I have talked to others who had rats with allerifes to it.Your best bet is aspen.

And yep, they do better in pairs.ALL of my rats are now together, except for one,Raymond. He is older and has been alone since I got him as a rescue.I have tried introducing other rats to him, but he won't take to them.Lone rats need extra attention too.
