pinkies

Can newborn pinkies go straight to the freezer or would that be inhumane? If not how can I kill them without being inhumane without using dry ice method.

no no no do don't put them in the freezer alive!!!!!! that is very inhumane. it will take them hours to freeze to death. to kill pinkies without dry ice method crush their head between your thumb and pointer finger toward their body so that the brain is completely crushed and is pushed into the neck. may get a little messy until you get it right but please don't freeze them alive.

If they're newborn I think it's alright to freeze them. What I do is I prefreeze a cup of water so it's very cold, but has not yet become ice. Then I take an icetray, fill each block 2/3 with the ice water, and drop the pinks in there. The reason why I use ice water is because it freezes them a lot faster than if you just put them in the freezer. This way they're usually dead within 20-30 seconds.

I don't even have colony yet just making sure. I think that is a little too messy. Does the stun method put them in paper bag and slam against the wall work better?

well i dont know why it would take hours for some people? I alwasy put my pinkies right in the freezer, 5 minutes later they are gone!

that is not true. that will most likely drown then before freezing them. which is also very inhumane. u don't just freeze 1, 2 , 3. mice are warm blooded animals. their high body temp will keep them alive for a least a few hours. the putting them in water freezes them faster cause they propally drown first. water even very cold water still takes a while to freeze. both drowning and freezing alive are very inhumane ways to kill them. just crush their head first, it only takes a split second and if done right theres little to no blood.

It would only take a human about an hour to die of hypothermia in 0C water, so I would say that a teeny newborn mouse without fur will die quite quickly from exposure.

ok that may be true but its still inhumane. even if death is in 20-30 seconds the pinky is in horrible pain and very scared during those 20-30 seconds. while crushing its brain kills it instintly. how would you rather die????

Just freeze them. Trying to "crush the head" will be messy, it's hard to kill a day-old pink with a flick in the head without making the thing explode.

Well I´m not sure which is the best way to do it but the less the animal suffer is better here is a link that you can check it seems like a good idea.

The pink is scared the moment you take it from it's mother. As for pain, death by hypothermia isn't painful for them because it is too fast. They are so small that they cannot generate enough heat on their own to survive, and would freeze to death at room temperature if left alone. Flash-freezing it would be the quickest and cleanest way to kill them, once they grow fur, then it takes too long and becomes inhumane.

Call me cruel or selfish but if you don't crush the pinky correctly, a bloody, twitching pinky is a lot traumatic than a pinky in a block of ice.

When you order online from rodentpro or cheese factory, do you honestly think they manually crush the skulls of each and every one of their pinkies? No. They probably just dump them all in the freezer.

And by using water they're not dying of drowning. Pinkies can actually hold their breath for an amazingly long period of time, and it's a LOT harder to kill them by drowning than by freezing. Believe me.. I've tried it. I also thought drowning would be quicker at first. So I submerged a pinky in a bowl of water (room temp) and after more than a minute, I took it out, and it was still moving. Ever since that experience I just freeze all my pinkies. Quick, clean, and painless.

Freeze them ice cube style. Quick and humane. No mess.

How would injecting air via needle into an infant mouse be appropriate CoralSnowCorn?

I dont know thats why I asked if it was ok, now I know not to do it, plus I thought if when you do it to humans they die pritty quick.I guess it would hert more, stupid idea my bad. lol
