Pinky Size - Photos

I'm not sure this is the right section, but I don't think it falls under feeding problems. Sorry if it's the wrong section, if so can it be moved? I got the smallest pinkie I could, but I worry it may still be too big for my snake. Any opinions? I took a photo of them next to the same object so you can get size comparisons

It looks marginally big. Probably fine. Any reason you got a live pink? Your baby should take frozen/thawed just fine...

The person I got him from said he's very picky, and I get 10 free feedings from the shop and they only sell live, and I can't afford to go buy a 6 pack of frozen (because I have money put away to take him to the vet and buy him a bigger cage and I don't want to dip into those funds). When I get my paycheck I'll start working on getting him to take frozen, for now though I'm stuck with live (and feeling bad about it because I'm a bleeding heart who just wants to keep said mouse)

You could get 10 live pinks from the shop of the right size and freeze them, that way you won't have to worry about them having the right size each time you go.
(And, not trying to be snippy, but if buying a pack of frozen pinks would affect your finances so badly, I really hope you don't need the vet for your new pet)

I understand what you're trying to say, I know it sounds really bad. I like to make sure I have plenty aside for them though. I have $200 away for vet bills that I'd rather not dip into just because that should cover basic expenses, and I can borrow the rest. I'll probably go back later then and get a few more pinkies and freeze them. Where I am they're charging $15 for 6 frozen pinkies so it's a little pricier as well

Hopefully you won't need the vet visit at all, most corns are pretty hardy and healthy if kept in the right conditions. Unlike cats, dogs etc they don't need check ups or vaccinations and most of their ailments can be cleared up if caught early enough.

Main thing I'm concerned about with him is his tail. when I got him the shed was stuck on and I got it off but I think it's too late. Looks like the very tip is done for. So, I'll be keeping an eye on that and I'll probably have that looked at because he's making me all paranoid about it

For the tail, check out this thread, might help: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128172

I dont think there's anything wrong with feeding live pinkies if that's all you can get right now. I feed frozen because its much cheaper and way more convenient. Otherwise I would do either, but if you've seen any videos of mice attacking the snake as their being constricted, you wouldn't feed your snake anything thats alive and larger than a pink. Pre-kill it.

Have you checked out the health section on here? Lots of tips for minor problems like tail tips. Try to get a good photo of his tail and put it on here....

Yeah, for the tail I posted on here. Thats the only way I knew how to get the shed off. By the time I got it off (second day I had him) I think it was too late. It's been alternating between dark brown and normal color so he's got me confused as can be. Yesterday it looked almost toilet paper roll brown, but today it looks almost normal saddle coloration for him so we'll see I guess. If we lose his tail I'll probably run him to the vet just to make sure he's fine

It's not worth running to the vet if he loses the tail tip. Can't do anything anyway. It's dead by that point, so probably not painful for him, either. You could dab an antibiotic ointment on it, but that would be mostly to make you feel better.

Isn't it Neosporin without anaesthetic that's recommended, Nanci? I'm with you, hard to see what the vet would do even if the tip is lost.
Miss Marie, it should heal with no trouble at all, but you may have to watch carefully for the next few sheds. Plus I personally wouldn't be checking it daily, as your new baby is still in the settling in stage. Probably too early for the first feed either for a few days yet, so you could just freeze that pinky and wait until you can get slightly smaller ones.

I've had him almost exactly a week, tomorrow. I went ahead and gave him the mouse today and he had no problems with it. I only handle him quickly to check his tail. My main concern is after the tail comes off is preventing an infection. I've never had a tail tip problem so it makes me paranoid. I just worry about him getting sick or infected

My snake's breeder recommended polysporin & the vet agreed with him. Just as long as the antibiotic ointment used was the clear type.

When we had our first snake aeons ago, my kids also had mice... they were supposed to be 2 males... one of the "males" had babies... ahem... so as soon as they were born, I put them in a zip lock bag & froze them right away. They just went back to sleep in a way. But wow, $15 for 6 pinkies, that's crazy! But... the price is only going to go up as the snake & it's food grows. Are you prepared for this?

If the live mice are free though, I agree with the others, freeze them when you get them home.

I'll be able to afford that no problem, but getting this boy drained my bank account because I wasn't intending to get him for a bit longer but I saw him and the tank he was in and he needed the change. So, I'll be able to afford it, I'm just low on cash until I get my paycheck again

Yeah, crazy unexpected snakes haha. Wasn't even planning on getting one for another month until I stumbled across him
