I was searching this forum throught to find answer to this, when I didn't, I used google.. no results. So I'm asking you now, who use this word:

Where is this pippy-word coming from? I know it means cornsnake.

Here in Finland we have similar word for cornsnakes too, "Piippi" (pronounced same way as "pippy"). And I have heard that it comes from "professional herpers", as to them cornsnake is cursed word, and as in music videos etc cursing is censored with sound effect or silence. I believe that you guys now this by word "bleep" as we here in Finland "piip" is what we use to censor.

But what is behind your word "pippy"?

I hope that understood what I was chasing about :)

It's a slang form of the verb pip. To pip is to start to emerge from the egg. The word originated with birds and the sound chicks make when breaking out of the shell, and was carried over to reptiles.

Thanks Jaxom :)

So pippy is used when talked about hatchlings? Here word piippi is used when talked about cornsnake in any age. But mostly it's used by those who are over cornsnake-"age" and moved on to "hot snakes". How could anyone get over cornsnake? ;)

Well, as soon as it slits the egg it becomes a pippy. When the baby emerges completely from the egg, it is a hatchling.

Some breeders sell "out of eggers" which are hatchlings that haven't been fed or sexed- just sent on their way to the new owner right away. They are cheaper than a hatchling that has been kept around and fed three or more times. It's a way to get a snake you couldn't otherwise afford, if you are confident you can get it eating.
