pissed off mama

Hi all, 1st time here, and I have a few questions. 1st, I have kept 2 corns since birth in the same cage, and they have done great. This morning, I awoke to a clutch of 10 eggs. (snakes are 20 months old). I have read posts, and removed the clutch into their own environment, with good humidity and temp. My main concern is for the mom; she has always been the most docile snake in the world, but now everytime I get near her she hisses, tenses up and readies to strike. Is this normal, should I just give her her space, etc., let her chill for a few days??? She was coiled around the clutch and very protective until a few hours ago, when she got some water, which gave me the opportunity to remove the eggs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My only suggestion that I'm going to make is to separate them immediately. At not even two years old she has to be pretty small. You want her to be able to get her strength back up and not have your male try to mate with her again. Other than the behavior change I'm not sure what to say. I'd definately separate them though.

Yup, though 18 months seems to be a minimum breeding "age" - but that's only for those who superfeed their corns to grow at maximum speed.

Get her on her own or she'll double clutch on you and that could be a bit risky if she's not 100% good to go after the first lay.

Keep us updated.

Thanks

I feel much better now....eggs are on their own and even though top ones are dented, I have a feeling with the temp and humidity being up there, they will come around. I also picked up the female for a bit tonite, she seemed back to her old self except for being kinda lazy, which is understandable, I guess. I tried to feed her and she was all about scarfing little micey down, which really made me feel better. And just to add a few more details, they are young, but already over 3 feet each. I dont overfeed; if anything, I underfeed...maybe 1 mouse every 10 days. The male is getting ready to molt, so he is chilling under his rock the last few days. They are still together. I probably should split them up, but it is a fairly large tank for them, and they have always chilled together(obviously more than I thought!) I never knew their sex, so it was a real surprise to find the clutch. I will keep updating, and it is very cool to be able to talk with people that share the same interests. Thank you all!

you should seperate after a clutch anyway for a while, just so the mother can build herself back up to full strengh and weight. Feed slightley smaller meals fr the first couple of meals, then go back onto regular meals, you don't want to "push" her to quickley, just build her back up again. To help this a temp seperation is in my opion necessary, say 6weeks, but thats only my though's on this subject.

Welcome to the forum, its a great place with lenty of friendlay people.

Hey there,

Try to not let her become gravid again this year. Even if she's well grown, at 20 months she's too young to be straining herself with a double clutch. Even if it means picking up a sweater box for one or the other to live in for the next 8-10 months or so, they're better off appart.
