Not sure if this is the right place to post this question but.... What do people do for Plants? Where do you buy them? I thought maybe a hobby store (hobby lobby, Micheal's) but then i read that there are chemicals in the fake plants from them stores. Is this true or harmful? The plants at local petshops ( pestmart and petsupermarket) are pretty pricey for a small plant. Thanks in advance

A lot of people buy plants from hobby stores. I'm too lazy- I never go there. To make a silk plant go a long way, I take one of those twisty bendy brown vines, cut it in half, and one of those six foot leafy vines, cut it in half, wind the leafy vine around the bendy vine, then form it into a serpentine, and you have two sturdy leafy vines that you can position however you like!

Most of the fake plants are imported from across an ocean. The shipping containers are fumigated with something- not sure if they still use formaldehyde- they used to when I was part of a crew that setup new stores for a big company that dealt in all things Chinese- and stocking a new store- wowie zowie, we'd all get headaches and symptoms opening box after box. We also had lots of potpooparie and scented candles and stuff to mask the formaldehyde scent in those stores when they opened. But if you just let them air outdoors for a day in the sunshine the stuff dissipates. I don't know if tossing them in the dishwasher for a soap-less cycle would make them any safer (or fall apart). But the one thing I know for sure is if it's good enough for Nanci it's trustable for me.

If you fancy live plants, the dracaena genus is safe. This includes ribbon plants, "lucky bamboo" (which isn't actually bamboo as I understand it), dragon tree (looks like a little tree), and several others. I have used dracaena spp. with my snakes for the last year, just change out the soil for something safe that has no fertilizers in it.

I bought a whole bunch of plastic aquarium plants off of eBay for cheaps. The do come from China, and they do have a plastic-y smell to them, so I boiled them in a mild bleach solution for about 20 minutes and rinsed them really well. All my kiddos seem fine with them, so something must be right!

BTW, I do this with anything I add to the vivs, whether it is rocks I find outdoors to seashells to driftwood. If it is natural, they still need to be disinfected before you introduce them to your viv.

I purchased some plants from michaels . I brought them home and soaked them in bleach solution for about 30mins then rinsed and rinsed a lot 2 days ago. All the plants smell clean but 2 which still have a bleach smell. Iv soaked them in clean water and rinsed them off probably 100 times but still have that smell. Is it ok to use these plants or should I just throw them away ? My next question is I fed my snake for the first time 2 days ago would it be ok to add these plants to the enclosure now or should I wait till he or she poops to make sure she doesn't throw it all back up?
