Plastic or glass?

Quick Strike

Future Snake Owner
Hey I'm curious what would make a better viv. One of those plastic storage tubs or a glass viv? I figure with a tub my future snake will have more room for hides and branches and general snake stuff, of course I would make lots of air holes on the top and on the sides. Or a glass Viv that would probably be smaller.

In my opinion a vivarium has more room for branches and stuff! I don't have a problem with snake tubs of a good size, but again in my opinion I think a lot of people use tubs which are way too small :shrugs:

If this is your first snake, I'd recommend a vivarium. In a tub, you will have trouble seeing your snake. Vivariums generally look nicer and I will always use them over tubs, so long as I have room for them, as vivariums are larger than tubs for an adult snake (or the ones I have seen are.)

I know some people here are pro-tubs, so you will get mixed opinions, but there're my thoughts on the matter.

Being a glass man myself I think it all depends on your meaning of the "Best".

If you mean most efficient, then tubs can be depending on your set up, number of snakes and application, (EG breeding or not). They can also be most cost effective.

However, if your sole purpose for owning a snake is to have a pet snake, as is mine. Then a glass viv is the way to go, you can see the snake easier, the viv is prettier, you can watch your snake without popping the top off. Glass vivs require less in the way of customizing, and most of the things you need for it can be readily obtained premade. Cons of course are cost. A basic glass viv will run you no less than $30 new, a Tub can be had for less than $10.

Just my thoughts, mind you I've never used tubs for my snakes, and switched my mice to glass tanks shortly after I began breeding them.

Where do you buy your vivs at Adui?

Bought the first at Petco, Paid too much.. Bought the 29 gallon at a thrift store for $15. Then I bought hardware cloth, (Heavy metal screen-like material, I bought the 1/4 inch squares size) and a 2x1, (wood) and made a top for it. (Roughly $10 for supplies and now I have a roll of Hardware cloth I will NEVER use up LOL!)
A saw, tape measure, wood screws and a staple gun were all I needed to do it. Now I have to buy a snake for the viv!!

Oh, and the heat mat was also purchased at Petco, 11.99 clearanced. I was going to buy the Flexwatt heat tape and make one, but no one locally sells it and the shipping for what I need makes it more expensive than just buying one.. (Beanfarm wants $9 to ship from south Washington state to NW Oregon!!!)

Hi again, personally i prefer glass just because of the few snakes i have and i like looking at them. :) You can buy glass tanks at pet stores or I THINK Eric Tobin (Pres. of MSH) could hook you up with one, thats where i bought my 3 20 gl. longs - they were like $30. Go to the MSH website and they'll have contact info, just give him your story and i'm sure he can help you :) (i'm also sure he'll try to sell you one of his hatchlings ;) ) Good Luck.

John

Eric is Located in Athens, but he goes to meeting in Lansing and grand rapids or he might meet you somewhere :shrugs:
