playing in the yard

I think there was a thread on here about this before but i couldnt find it. How do you all feel about letting your snakes explore your lawns and out side a little bit.

I take my snakes out for photo shoots and usually put them in branches, or somewhere somewhat containable. I let larger corns play on the grass sometimes, but never a hatchling.

These play sessions are usually pretty short, and as soon as the snake gets fixated on burrowing (which is usually pretty quickly) then the play session is over. I have a lot more success with low branches. I feel more comfortable that I can reach the snake at all times, and they tend to have nicer poses if you're into having a photo shoot with them.

The idea of exercise is definitely good though! Depending on what kind of home your snake lives in.. tub vs tank, I don't think they always get the amount of exercise that is the most beneficial for them. Good luck, have fun and be safe!

Make sure you pick a day that's warm enough, but not too warm. Also, that the area hasn't been treated with fertiliser, pesticide or weedkillers etc.

I take him out on a warm day. I live in Manitoba Canada so we don't usually get brutal hot days. Im not so worried about him getting away i was more thinking about mites and stuff.

That is what I was thinking...Possibly picking up mites. We have a lot of lizards that roam around so I am sure there are mites as well. It looks like its quite a clean up when you get mites so not for me! Not going to go there!

I do take mine out on the balcony (I am in an apartment) sometimes when it is warm, but cooler weather. He spends a few minutes in the filtered sun, in my hands.

But don't mites jump on & off, so in an lizard-infested environment wouldn't there be lizard mites on the ground?

I don't worry about it myself, I have never seen a garter snake in the yard of the building I live in though, so my adults go for supervised slithers. Until they try to burrow nose first into the ground, and that ends the slither session.

Even if anoles had mites (I've caught hundreds, and never seen a mite) lizard mites don't feed on snakes.

We also have what we call ribbon snakes and rattle snakes. It's just like baking a piece of wood that has come from outside. I figure, why take a chance when I don't really need to. No good trees to take pictures in anyway around here! LOL :)

But I do enjoy the outside pictures you guys take. There are some great props people use on here!
