poop questions

Sandra

corn neophyte
my yearling ate her first full fuzzy last week, on Thursday. I have been looking in her viv and giving it the sniff test, but so far, no poop. Will my nose know immediately? When should I expect her to poop? (I know, I know - probably on my hand tonight when I hold her.)

I know a lot of snakes like to poo in the bath. I've only had her for about 2 weeks. Can I go ahead and try her in a bath now? If so, what temp should the water be?

Yup, Sandra...no poop here either. Or so I don't think so, but J_Daniels said they will often poo in their tunnels. Maybe a good sift through the substrate?

Hi Sandra,

Our yearlings will poo a fuzzy 3-7 days after a meal. How quickly it appears seems to be determined by cage temps and how active the snake in question is. A more active snake tends to digest a meal more quickly. If you use newspaper as a substraight then you will probably smell it, but if you use a more absorbent material like repti-bark then you probably will not notice an odor. Also, if you use such a material, you may not see it because they often poo under the repti-bark. We have one snake that uses one of his hides as a personal toilet so we always have to check there for poo. Happy hunting. :p

well I poked around for poo, and my finger is still clean! I think I may give her a bath tomorrow night and see if that gets things moving before her next feed on Thursday. I never thought I'd be hunting for snake poop! :poke:

In my collection...

9 times out of 10 they seem to poop around the edges on the cage. Either that or right up against the water bowl.

That isn't to say that always happens, but that is the norm around my collection anyway.

It is safe to give her a bath. It is kind of fun. They wriggle around and take these long flowing strokes that are very nice to see. It is also cool to watch them poo in the water... They get real still and then squeeze squeeze and they shooop... Guess I'm kinda gross for finding that entertaining. It is like having the discovery channel in my bathroom.

As far as the temp goes..... I warm up the water a bit but not to where it is hot. Don't put the snake in anything you wouldn't put a baby in.

Have fun, GL, and take pictures.

Aaron
