POOPING

I have two corns about 4-6 months old. I have had them about a month. I recently placed them in warm water(separately) to soak them a bit and they both pooped in the water. Is this a natural action? Or is this a defense thing? They have never pooped on me and are very docile when handling. Very adventurous. I am just curious as to why they both pooped when placed in a bit of water.

Thanks to everyone on this site. So many helpful and knowledgeable people.

Haven't you ever heard of the slumber party trick where you put someone's hand in warm water and they will pee their pants?

The warm water relaxes their muscles. Then they poop.

That is great news :) I might try to get them on a warm water pooping schedule lol. That way their area stays nice and clean. Would that be wrong?

What's so hard about just spot cleaning their cage? It's silly to *make* them go to the bathroom when you want. Don't do it. It's ridiculous.

It isn't hard at all. In fact it is a lot easier than what I am suggesting. But it also creates new interactions and bonding time doesn't it? Moisturizing the snakes(which one has now had 2 tough sheds) Wouldn't it benefit us all?

That is if my snakes like the water. I wouldn't do anything to over stress my beloved corns Anna & Molly. They're my babies :D

It's not going to moisturize the snake because it doesn't last long enough(that's what a humid hide is for) and snakes don't bond emotionally. They develop tolerances.

Also, getting and keeping the temperature just right is difficult. "somewhat warm" to us could be 90 degrees, which is too hot to immerse the snakes in, and water cools quickly, which would cool your snake quickly as well.

That is almost as bad as the lady who used to be on here and wanted to put diapers on her snakes. I did have a dog that would go pooh pretty much on command, was good for at the dog shows before we went into the ring.

Thank you for the advice I do appreciate it. But to say snakes don't bond? I have had a snake that would love for me to hold him. Seemed happy when I did. I am not saying that was bonding but who knows. I am not saying the do but how can you say they don't? I am not trying to be rude, I am just curious if this is your opinion or if there are studies or posts on this. I apologize if it does sound rude. I honestly don't mean it to be.

Your not being rude at all. To me and is just my opinion. Snakes don't bond, they may like feeling your body heat at times. Snakes have primitive brains and function more for hunting, eating, hiding, and the like. I think it is more us as humans that like to implant human emotions on our pets no matter the species and there is nothing wrong with that. But like I said is all just my opinion on it.

Unfortunately, higher emotions like "love" and bonding are exceedingly difficult to test for in a reptile, especially without overt displays like are present in birds, mammals. None of my snakes overtly prefer *me* when being handled, as long as the other person is calm and confident. If I put them down on the floor, they don't come right back to me, they go off to explore. They know me, they know I'm not a threat, but they aren't "happy" to see me unless I have a mouse for them.

Mmm, I have mixed feelings on the issue of snakes bonding...Perhaps they develop a familiarity with a particular person and will return to what is familiar if given the option? Because the snake in my avatar WILL return to me if other people are holding him and I step close to them. I don't flatter myself that he's attached to me, I think I'm just more familiar to him than anyone else and he is comfortable with the familiar.

:) You make very valid points. I guess it is my wishful thinking lol. Thank you again for your time and expertise. I am glad I joined this forum.

I think that part of my appeal toward snakes is that they don't bond.
I don't have to handle them to make them happy...

And I care for snakes out of pure love for snakes, not to get love back from them.

I love to hold my corns. They are still small right now. I can't wait for them to grow. I am anxious to see how their colors develop.

If I'm about to hold my snake and I notice a bulge by the vent, then I absolutely will give her a slightly warmer than room temperature bath because I'd much rather have her poop in the water than on me during handling.

As long as it isn't overly stressing them (my other snake clearly hates being in the water, so I don't do that for her), I see no problem with letting them poop in the water.

I definitely agree with this! As much as I love dogs (and other mammals), it sure is great to not have to worry about my snake's not getting enough 'me' time.

I love to hold my corns, too... but I have 100 of them. It is a bit hard to hold ALL of them all the time.
Luckily they don't mind.

I couldn't do this with an animal that bonds... like dogs.
I would be a nasty hoarder. The dogs would be sad.

My snakes aren't sad and I am happy. Good all around.

Exactly.
It is great to have a pet that I can go on vacation and not worry about.

I have a cat, and he is my baby. I don't need a snake that bonds with me.
