"Popping" Question-Please Help

Hope H

Corn-A-Holic
I had heard somewhere that there was something called "Popping" to tell the sex of your corn. Mine is 9 Months old and I need to no what sex it is. Any and all info on this procedure would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone out there done this and how do you do it?

Cider,
This is not difficult, once you have done it, but you should really have someone show you this procedure. If done incorrectly you cold injure the snake. How large is the snake? usaully anything over 17"-19" is to big to "pop". I'm not saying it can't be done, I just find it safer to use a probe, which can be just as dangerous in the wrong hands. Both these procedures are described in The Corn Snake Manual--If you have not bought it yet- I highly recomend it. Best of Luck!

Its fairly easy to do, well you know where their "poop shoot" is. Well you just pop it open and if something pops out then it is a male, but i wouldnt do it if you dont know what you are doing

9 months old is probably too big to pop...

"Popping is manually inverting the snake’s hemi-penis (yes he does have 2), by using firm pressure and pushing up on the snake’s underside just below the vent. In theory this causes the afore mentioned hemi-penis to invert (stick out) of the vent. The problem here is that not every male will invert. Some just won’t regardless of how many times you have done this procedure and how experienced you are with it. This of course leads to falsely calling a snake a female when it is a male. Now if you have gotten the Hemi-penis to invert, well then you are pretty darn sure that it’s a boy snake then!"

That "" of info came from: http://hometown.aol.com/hopfam1/indexfaq.html

Go to a local herp show or an experienced breeder and have them demonstrate. Maybe even a vet... Don't risk injury.

Take everyone's advice, don't do it yourself without an experienced person to show you. If you don't want to go to a vet, you can always go to herp expos and ask the people there to show you how to do it. I'd say anything under a yearly you can still pop. Anything more than that, I wouldn't do it. Assumming a yearling is under 1.5 feet.

Thank You All

I had thought that it might be safer then a probe, wasn't sure. She/He is about 24", give or take a few. I'm going to have to look around to try and find some one experienced. I live in the "Boonies", Eastern Shore of Maryland. No one around here! Once again, Thank you all...
