Greetings,

I held my first corn snake last Saturday. I am so enthralled by this sweet little girl---I want to go back and visit her again!

But, I'm a person who likes to research a topic to death (and then some!) before taking action. In this case, I must really think it through because I already am "mom" to ten ferrets and three cats. And I have a roommate with three more cats.

At this time, I've learned I *definitely* need to keep the ferrets separate from any snakes---for both their sakes! I'm not *planning* on getting a large quantity of snakes, so at this time, I'm thinking about a set-up which would be up on a stand (an aqariuim on a stand?).

I don't know enough to be able to make a good decision on choosing a snake yet. I'm pretty sure I don't want to go to a "big chain" pet store. I'd be fine with a small breeder who loves their snakes.

I think that's pretty much it so far. I can be found in a variety of places: Ravelry, Facebook, Delicious and LibraryThing. In all those places, my username is the same as here: annekaelber.

I look forward to getting to know the people here and learning from you all!

Anne.

Well, first of all, welcome to the forum! :)
If you haven't read any of the FAQs yet, then the best places to start are the Husbandry & Basic Care FAQ and the Health Issues/Feeding Problems FAQ. They will answer a lot of questions that you may have.
After that, you can look through the pictures and decide what morph you'd like to get. There are so many to choose from, it's hard to narrow it down to 1! :)
As for breeders, you really can't go wrong with a Serpenco snake. :) Rich Z has some gorgeous snakes, and i've heard nothing but good things about him and his snakes. (Not to mention he's the nice person who lets us have this forum!)
Other than these suggestions, I can't really think of much else to say. I'm sure you'll love having a snake in your life, and you can't go wrong with a Corn as your first. :) Good luck, and post pictures if you decide to get one! :D

Welcome!! We're a multi-pet household here too, but it's a blast! For sure, do reasearch, and learn all you can first. We kept ferrets and snakes for years without incident.

Good luck!

Tonya

I don't see an issue with having a snake and ferrets if the snakes tank is out of ferret reach.
Snakes are not really hard to care for as long as you keep up on proper temperatures, humidity, and don't mind walking those cute lil baby mice and rats to deaths lane. Some people think they can get around it by feeding only frozen dead mice, but trust me sometimes feeding live is unavoidable.

Other then that its pretty basic.

Well, I have kept snakes since 1995. Ball pythons, a grey band king, 2 desert kings, a cali king, a Florida king, rosy boas and dozens of cornsnakes are what I've kept. With the exception of a VERY few hatchlings that refused everything else, I have NEVER had to feed live.
Feeding live is NOT unavoidable.....

As I am quoting myself here I stated "sometimes" feeding live is unavoidable. I wasn't speaking directly from the snakes preference, but to the fact that if you purchase snake feed locally she may come to a point where live is all they have in at a unlucky point in time. Pet stores only carry so much, compared to the large numbers of snake owners. I am simply warning her this CAN happen.

That's why smart snake owners buy in bulk, and have it onhand before feeding day. Going home and thawing after working all day beats stopping on the way home every time!

Yes, but it still doesn't eliminate the possability for everyone else LOL. Not speaking personally here, but I have spoken to people who simply cannot buy in bulk, either they cant afford the extra shipping. "Even though the prices are still cheaper then the pet store with the shipping cost."
Or they just don't have any bulk sellers locally and can't order online for whatever reason they may have at the time.
Not saying this happens to everyone, but then again even bulk buyers get their "gray" days. Shizz happens. We are human.
Doesn't make anyone less smart of snake owners just because they don't get bulk even though I do agree it is more useful in the long run.

True...

I'm one of those who have always loved snakes, but it took me getting a blue tongue skink (He's 15 years old now) and joining a herp club to discover that mice can be purchased frozen. I had not considered ever OWNING a snake until then!

I currently have my 15 year old BTS, an amazing Florida "goini" king, 6 rosy boas and 22 corns not including 5 adult corns I am currently selling.

I can see why you need to purchase in bulk! Thats alot of snakes. Me I just purchase a few 3 packs of froz. Mice and I'm good to go for like three weeks.

So does raising your own and using a homemade CO2 Chamber. Will put mine together very soon and post directions and pics in the DIY section. I only have one corn and a ksb so for now my design is small but should work for me. I'm hoping it can help others with just one or two snakes.

Anyway when you get your snakes please put up pics!

LOL and welcome!
