Power Feeding?

Mortimer is fine. I will post pictures soon. I am pretty sure he is anerythristic. Well anyways, he is about a month and a half old, and I am power feeding. Currently, hes on sunday, the wednesday, and then again on friday. Too much? he eats very well, but i think iv'e been feeding him too much. Would a three day schedule be better?

Way too much. Power feeding can lead to obesity and an increased risk of regurge due to not allowing enough time between meals for full digestion.

Once ever 5 days is considered generally to be the max for hatchlings, with them doing well with being fed once every 7 days. They just grow slower, but grow with more muscle and less pudge.

My second-youngest gets fed once every 5 days. My newest addition will be on this schedule as well. The next youngest once every 6, and the older guys and gals once every 7 or 8.

That is WAY TOO MUCH! Why are you power feeding your snake, anyway? What are you hoping to accomplish? Are you planning to breed?

There aren't really a whole lot of reasons to power feed, unless you are breeding. Even then, it's not recommended. When power feeding, the soonest you should feed the next meal is 24 hours after your snake poops. That is usually about 3 days after you feed. That is pushing it and not recommended.

I would follow Shiari's advice and move your snake to an every five day, feeding plan. Also, look up the Munson plan and that will help you get on a fairly "aggressive", but a safer regimen.

Good Luck,

Wayne

:-offtopic (but only somewhat)

I was thinking about this today. I am sure there are lots of feeding charts and stuff on the net but is there any way we could make like an "average" feeding chart, something you could go to like if the snake is x old you should be feeding y (pinky, fuzzy, etc) z often. It might be helpful for people who are new to cornsnakes and aren't sure what is healthy, how often, and what to feed. Maybe this already exists here, I don't know. Just a thought.

There could be charts for all sorts of things too like healthy weights for different ages of snake, when breeding is appropriate weight wise. Hmm.

Thoughts?

That's pretty much what the Munson Plan is...

And some of those things vary SO much based on the individual snake, it would be impossible to have a chart that would work for every snake.

Well, breeding weight for females is most often expressed as 300g minimum. The rule of 3s: 3 years, 3 feet long, 300 grams.

The munson plan shows feeding schedules based on the snake's weight and the prey item weight.

A healthy weight x age thing wouldn't work out because some corns are 'normal' but only 50 grams at a year, and others are 'normal' and over 100. I have a 2 year old who is a very slow grower and has finally reached a whopping... 46 grams.

There isn't any way to say that a snake should be fed "X" when it's "Y" years old. Corns come in all different sizes, even though they are the same age. So that wouldn't work.

The closest that you can come to is the Munson Plan. Here is the link;

The only thing, is that you need a scale, so you can weigh your snake and the feeders.

Good Luck,

Agreed...and I have an '08 that is 184 grams...following the Munson Plan.
