Power feeding...

Ok, I did something stupid and started power feeding my snake not knowing that is can be harmful. I was told by a friend that it makes them bigger, but he never said anything about the dangers of constepation and obesity.

Is there a feeding schedual anyone can give me to get my snake back into a healthy feeding habbit? I've been giving him one mouse pinkey a day and now I have been feeding him one every two days. I'm cutting him back little by little.

Thanks

Just like any other creature on the face of the earth, eating too much food (or WAY, WAY too much food in this case) can cause health problems that begin with obesity but don't stop there. Do you have any pictures of this snake?

Here are some pics. I do'nt havee a digital camera anymore so I used my webcam.

I looked at that and I am more confused than ever. Do you think he is big enough to eat fuzzies yet? And what does it mean but the 20-30g stuff?

20-30g when read from the munson plan chart, means a single mouse weighing 20 to 30 grams.

The other way to work out the right size of food, is to feed a mouse no larger than 1 to 1.5 times the girth of the snake at its thickest point, about mid belly.

Hope that helps :)

Ok so if I were to feed my snake a fuzzy, it will only be one fuzzy every 11-14 days? Do I always feed him the max thing he can take? Like for instance, if the biggest thing he were to be able to eat is a regular fuzzy, then only give him one?

-When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 5-6 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 6-7 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (20-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+) See below.

Note: Adult females are fed more frequently than adult males (especially following brumation). Adult females are fed every 7-12 days; adult males are fed every 11-14 days.

This is by no means scientific, and not all corns will cooperate 100% with the schedule. The weight ranges I gave for the prey and snakes are approximate.

I've bolded just one line from the chart as an example, this is how I read it...

If my snake weighs 24 to 30 grams, then it should be able to eat 1 small fuzzy, weighing 5 to 7 grams every 6 to 7 days

Does that make more sense? :shrugs:

Yes I get it now. Thank you. But is this meathod supposed to help induce growth and make them bigger or is this just another way of feeding on a more healthy level?

You know what plan is easier, and perhaps healthier? Feed your corn a mouse that is no more than 1.5x its girth, every seven days. When it's an adult, alter the schedule to maintain proper body proportions (an adult corn's cross-section should be like a loaf of bread-- not round).

Alright, that's cool. Now when you say their cross section should be like a loaf of bread, do you mean their girth size should be equivelent to the loaf of bread, the shape of the snake should look like a loaf of bread, etc.... I'm a little dim-witted so bare with me lol.

The cross-section should be like a bread loaf in shape: generally roundish with a flat ventral surface. There's no way to give you an exact, preferred diameter. Corns are slender; an obese one should be obvious.
