Power outage, no heat, WHAT TO DO!

cornsnakelovah

Romulan with corn snakes
Well my electricity is back on, so my snakes are saved, but I just don't know what to do if it happens again. It was out so no heat with temps dropping below 55 degress for 24 hours. My parents won't sping for a generator. I can't afford it, because I have to pay for EVERYTHING when it comes to my snakes... Anyone pray tell me what to do if this happens again. My snakes took quite a bit of time to recover this time.

And this is one great advantage to me using a wood stove for heat, I have heat with or without electricity.

The only thing I can think of is maybe spring for a bunch of hand warmers or feet warmers. Another possibility, I dont know how long it would work but they have backup power supplies for computers that keep your computer running for like an hour or two after the power goes out, that may work but im sure it will las even shorter if powering heating pads.

Buy some heat packs (the ones used in shipping) and some cheap coolers. Not sure how many herps you have, but put them in bags or cups in the coolers with a heat pack or two. If they are not full of food, corns, rats, and kings can take pretty chilly temps. So keep them on the cool side rather than too warm. It is easy to "cook" them when using heat packs. Keep the heat packs as far away as possible from the animals to avoid overheating.

The place to buy the kind of heat packs used for shipping snakes is Superior Shipping. We get the 40 hour heat packs. If a bad storm is in the forecast, just don't feed your snakes until it has passed.

A bare bones things I have done in the past, I put them into pillow cases or cloth snake bags...and then I put them under my down comforter in my bed to keep them toasty until the power comes back on.

I remember doing that once, a long time ago (in the '70s). I only had a few pets back then. Of course, you have to get under the blanket with them, or use heat packs, since they don't produce their own heat.

Haha nice :) Yeah I only have 5 total so a much different scenario than how many you are dealing with of course. And yeah if it got down cold enough here I would for sure get in the bed with them and get it good and toasty :D

55º for 24 hours won't hurt them one bit. Yes, get some heat packs in case of extreme emergency or prolonged low temps. But its heat you have to worry about more than the cold with corns. They can tolerate 50º for a bit, no so much with 100º.

Put them in a snake bag and snuggle them under your hoodie! :) I've kept a snake or two in my bra in an emergency. Not sure what that says about me but there you go.

Hopefully you are more into corns than boas and pythons, lol!

LOL....an amazon in my bra.....hmmmm, or maybe my copperhead.....er! My fireplace heats my house nicely so in a pinch I could open the door to the snake room and let the heat from the house keep it warm or put a cooler with the snakes in the livingroom near the fireplace.

At least you only lost it for a day. We were out of power for a week from the snow storm! It was bad in the wooded outskirts of Quakertown. But luckily we had a generator, but it wasn't on all the time. And the first 2 days we didn't have heat at all. My house got down to 54 degrees. I put tons and tons of hand and feet warmers under each of their aquariums, and wrapped their cages in blankets and towels. Thats all i could do. So far their all good. Even the little babies.
