Price question

Just got a snake from Petco (seemed like a sweet guy/girl) and I looked up the type, and I think it's a Okeetee. Is $20 a good price for a baby of this? I was just wondering is all. Thanks all!

Price is subjective. Yes, $20 is fine if you did not want to spend much, or if you don't care about the babies parents, feeding records, shed records, general health or sex. Personally I would support a breeder whose passion is this species of snake and to me that is worth more than just money. Your new pet could live 15-20 years so how much it costs really matters less than is it what you really want and is it healthy? However, most people do get their first at pet shops and then discover this delicious underworld later on! You have just unknowingly begun a wonderful alternate lifestyle, and it can be very very addictive!

Hopefully your new baby is healthy and eats for you, and does not have mites or other problems. If everything is right with this kid, $20 is a great price. He most likely is a classic and not an okeetee, as chain pet shops rarely have okeetees.

And I would love to see pics of your new little one!! Please?

For a "chain store" that's a good price for any type of corn snake.
Just wondering tho.... how much did they robbed you for the rest of the stuff!! LOL LOL

I was just curious. I would have liked to get one from a breeder, but the only breeder is another pet store, and I wasnt sure I wanted the morph they had. And this little guy was so sweet when I looked at them, so I got him. I was just wondering about this particular breed because I dont know that much about it. They said he was eating just fine. He ate the day before I got him, 2 pinkies, so he should be fine. He seems to be healthy and happy so far. Please dont look down on me for getting him from a chain pet store. They seemed to be good about how they were caring of them, and I am in there so often to buy products that I know that they are good people there. I was just kind of curious how much snakes like that cost, I have no idea about what should cost what. I just fell in love is all, but was curious.

Haha ya, sometimes they do have crazy prices! But they price match stores, and sometimes they have good sales, and I get 5% cash back haha :) Gotta take what I can get with all my animals!

I have noooo idea how to post pics...help?

Yep, I have problem doing that too....
I use photobucket then move then to here. Any web site like that would work tho.

On a side note you can save some $$$$$ by going to craft stores for fake vines and such you liker and make hide from empty food boxes, Old "tufferware" type of stuff. paint them if you want. Water bowls from the dollar store. If you use aspem for bedding buy it in bulk for $12-$15 for a big bag , shop around.

Side note: if you just got the baby and it was fed the day before, it is of utmost importance that you leave it strictly alone to digest and settle in. I'd wait a week before attempting to feed, then 48-72 hours before handling.

haha ya I'm using one of my cats small water bowls as a watering bowl for him, and his little cardboard box he came in is his hidey hole thing on the cool side, and on the warm side is something I bought on "super sale" haha. And no worries! Def going to leave him him alone for a while, do not want him regurging on me :( I figured a week to let him get settled in. That's what I did with my other guy (who's been with me about 2 weeks now! Oh the addiction is starting! haha) and thanks for the advice!

It sounds like you're really asking is, did I get ripped off? And the answer to that question is, no, as long as the snake is healthy and parisite free.

Around here the usual pet store price is $40 and up.

When I'm wondering if something is over priced, a friend tells to look at it this way. Would I be happier with the money in my pocket, than spending it on the something? It sounds like the snake is making you happier than having the $20 in your pocket, so good job! Enjoy your snake.

Ya, I guess I was sorta curious about that too haha. I just dont know anything about right pricing, and there are only 3 stores that sell snakes in the area, and 2 are chain stores. And the other one, the prices are all higher, but they only have 1 or 2 morphs that are babies right now, and they are not the morph that I got. They usually have bloodred, and I think, the normal red color. And the snake did make me much happier, so it was a $20 well spent :) I love my little guy already! I am really curious as to how he's going to look when he gets older, will be a lot of fun to watch him grow!

Oh! Congratulations! That's exciting! Good luck! I'm sure they will all be beautiful :) You will have to post pics of them!

This has been shared many times throughout various threads but here is a list of breeders on this forum, some of which may be in your area. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76317

Also, here is a link to the various corn snake morphs in case you decide to add to the addiction - it helped us out when we first got started.

For most breeders, the 2012s are just now starting to hatch and this is the busy season - you should start to see some prices and can view breeders websites for prices on various morphs. As long as your new baby is healthy as mentioned above, I think you got him/her for a wonderful price.

ok cool thanks. I will check them out. The problem I've been having with looking for breeders, is that when I go to their sites, it always seems as if they've stopped breeding for one reason or another.
And thanks for the morph link! I appreciate it :) I'm sure that (if my boyfriend is ok with it haha) will want to get more. I'd like to get a nice rack set up in one of our rooms :)

Oh! And I think I finally figured out how to post a pic! It's not a great pic, sorry, didnt want to handle him more and he was stressed out so I snapped one and let him be haha lets see if this works...

ok, apparently not....but I put a pic of him in my album. My other is a really pretty (cant tell too well from the poor lighting) lavender morph that I got 2 1/2 weeks ago. The addiction seems to have hit pretty quickly haha. I love my lavender baby, he's just so sweet and docile. Handles everything so well!!

I'm in Florida, and I have not stopped breeding! Neither has Susan, over on the West coast. Or Lee Abbott who specializes in Okeetees! There are lots of active breeders right in your state.

Shipping a snake from anywhere in the continental US is routine. It's only scary if it's the first couple times you buy a snake on-line, or if it's the first couple time you ship off a baby. Nearly all of my snakes have come from other states.

You live in florida? Great! Where at? I live on the space coast :) Glad to know there is someone down here! I checked out some of the sites, and it seemed some were active and some weren't. Do you or anyone you know breed the sunkissed morph? Its just so pretty! And I love it when it's crossed with lavender. Eventually I'd like to breed my lavender male, but wasn't sure whether I wanted to do it myself or stud him out in return for one of the babies. Do people do that? And with ordering online, I'm just worried partly too of temperament and such. Can all snakes become friendly with handling and care? I know when I got this guy, he was the only one who I wasn't sure was going to try and bite me haha. And I suppose I'm worried about buying from someone who's not legitimate, ya know? Scary entering in my credit card on a new site haha. But I am very glad that someone is down here. Do you guys ever let anyone come in person and look at your stock and the parents of the hatchlings? I wouldn't mind driving a bit if I could do that :) I was hoping at Repticon sometime this year maybe I could get another one. Do you guys goto that? I just found out about it recently, and it looks like it would be a lot of fun! Sorry for so many questions! I will definitely visit your site though! Thank you very much! :)

Hi again!! I am not Nanci, but I know her and yes she lives in Florida and is a great breeder. She has some of the most gorgeous and well cared for babies I have ever seen. I don't think she breeds Sunkissed, but there are quite a few who do. Check out the For Sale section, when you have a chance. And if you decide to buy another snake check out the BOI before you do.

I looked and it looks like Susan (I think it was her) is breeding sunkissed and they laid eggs a month ago :) So maybe I will be able to get them from her. I really like the lavender sunkissed, and I have a boy lavender, so maybe eventually when they get old enough I'll be able to breed them. I really like the almost pink color they have. And I love both the lavender morph (that's what my first guy was) and the sunkissed :) And is BIO bio? like biography? How do I check that out? Just ask the breeder? Thanks! I really appreciate all of you guys responding!
