Pricing opinions on Kingsnake ad

I saw this Candy Cane advertised on Kingsnake yesterday. The ad has since expired, but I saved the photo.

It was advertised as a 'large female', and was priced at $300. She is a beautiful snake, but I don't know much about the Candy Cane genetics. Does this seem like a fair price?

Thanks for any input!

Kathy

Well, if you had a nice CC to pair it up with, and she throws just 10 nice candycane babies you've made your $$$ back with one clutch...FWIW I've seen alot of underpriced adults the last few months; maybe we need to reevaluate their worth :shrugs:

It's definitely not a "great deal" for the buyer, but if you really needed a nice candycane and had an equally nice one to pair it up with it may be worth it :*)

Holy crap. I want that.

That's what I said too! I would have snapped her up in a minute, but the price was too steep for a morph I know nothing about.

$300 is more than I would pay for one. CCs are just selectively bred Amels.

Thanks Josh. I did notice that the guy who was selling her listed a pet store, but I can't remember the name of it. That makes me think that this snake is overpriced due to the overhead he has to cover.

Thanks,

Kathy

I don't have a suitable male, but something about her color and pattern just grabbed my attention. I would buy her for a display animal, but not for that price. I'm sure she would be worth it for someone who planned to pair her with another spectacular animal.

Honest opinion here...Carol's candycanes are much nicer than that one. I also have a feeling that were she to sell an adult female, it probably wouldn't cost $300, but even if it did, her candycanes blow that one out of the water.

I've seen nicer candy canes than that for lower prices. These days, like it or not, $300 can buy you very nice adults with rarer genes and gene combos.

AGREED!

Guys and Gals,

Thanks for the input. I do think this is a very pretty snake, but I will have to check out Carol's. I wasn't aware that she produced Candy Canes, but I should expect nothing less than stellar animals if my Miami Motley from her is any indication!

I personally think that is a great example of a candy cane! However, the corn market is so crappy now, I wouldn't spend $300 on that girl. In the end, she really is just a nice amel from a genetics stand point. I'd probably spend $150 max for her, but that's just my 2¢.

I certainly don't want to insult the guy, but that's in the ballpark of what I thought I might offer if he puts the ad back up.

He'll probably have a good laugh (or cry), and then promptly block my IP address!

I suppose if I'm really serious about Candy Canes, I need to check out what Carol might have.

Thanks,

Kathy

There was a time (before the Great Recession!) when I would have asked about $200 - $250 for a female like that, and would have gotten it. These days, I would probably be lucky to get $150 or possibly $175, even if she has a good breeding history.

She is very pretty, but an excellent candycane would have more white in the background instead of pink as this one shows.

If the ad has expired, and it hasn't sold, he may be open to negotiations. If he is reasonable, he won't be insulted if you phrase the offer appropriately. That is, tell him how much you admire the animal, but you just don't have more than $___ to spend - is it possible he can part with it for that? OTOH, if you say that it is way overpriced, and should have more white in the background for that price, then he may well be insulted, lol! If he is insulted even after you compliment his snake and lament your inability to pay his price, then he is not a reasonable person, and it is not your problem.

Go for it if you are really interested! Just be sure to check him out on the BOI if he has to ship to you. And try to pay with a credit card (not PayPal) if he accepts such payments. Then you do have some recourse if there is a problem.

You must spread some reputation around before giving it to kathylove again

Excellent advice from someone that knows the market, inside and out, up and down. It's a nice CC, but there are better available, and usually at cheaper prices. A reasonable seller is always open to reasonable offers. An unreasonable person is always insulted. Not much you can do about an unreasonable individual...

I don't think it's a Candy Cane worth $300-- if I wanted a Candy Cane I'd check with Carol and see what she has. I guess I'm predjudice, but I think she has about the best stock I've seen around. That's my $0.02!!!!

So I probably shouldn't open with "Dear Jerkface" . . . . :)

Thanks for the info Kathy. I didn't know the genetic make-up of the CCs, so I wanted to get some opinions from more knowledgable folks first. Probably a moot point though; the ad was only up for a day.
