Progression thread: Mira

OregonSnake

New member
I've decided to start a thread on Mira, in case any one is interested in her progress. Mira escaped last January and was recently found at the very end of May. Although thin, she came back remarkably healthy and unharmed for being on her own for 5 months.

Here's a picture of her before escaping:

A picture the day I found her (she's in blue)

Hi there, OregonSnake!!

Definitely interested in the progress of Mira and am interested to know if she will catch up to your other snakes of the same age.

Glad she's eating!

An update: she's currently back in blue. It will be interesting to see whether or not some of her scars/damaged scales will change at all with her shed. She's currently eating about once a weak and I've never had an issue with her refusing a meal. She currently weights only 7 grams. In comparison, the other two I got at the same time as her weight 33 and 29 grams. I'll take new pictures and get a new weight after she sheds. Hopefully, we'll see a bit of weight gain.

Today was feeding day, so I took a couple pictures of her. She has shed (almost in one piece, except for the tail tip) and now weighs 13 grams. I'm afraid that she is going to lose the tip of her tail. I've tried to loosen the shed, but it's months of layering and will not come off. Other than the tail tip, she seems healthy and is growing. She also seems to be getting more vibrant. Here is a couple updated pictures:

Sorry for the cellphone quality pictures. I would have brought out the big camera, but the feeding kept me preoccupied.

Idk if you can use it on snakes but I think it's zoo med that makes it, it's called shed ease, you dilute it into water and let them soak in it for awhile they also have a spray version I used to used it on herp rescues that had retained sheds like iguanas and water dragons helped the spikes and tails a lot, but I've only just gotten into snakes recently and haven't had shed issues yet, I would definitely recommend it if it's safe for snakes, since I've heard mineral oil is t good for some snakes

Yes, you can use ZooMed shed ease on snakes. I'm not sure how much it will help in this case, but it's worth a try. When I got Mandy from the rescue she had some stuck shed on her tail, but only one layer. Since she was acclimating, I didn't want to spoof her by using more invasive methods, so I just spritzed her tail a few times over two weeks. It still came off slowly, loosening more and more as she went about her business. One day it just came all the way off. Fortunately, her tail was totally intact and undamaged.

Well it's worth a shot for sure I would give a 10-15 minute soak once a day for a few days t certainly won't hurt.

Thank you for the recommendation! I don't normally have issues with stuck sheds, and in this case, most of the damage happened while she was out on her own. The tail is definitely dead at the tip. I've tried to soak and remove the shed but so far no luck. I'm fairly certain it will eventually fall off. I'll keep the zoomed in mind.

In answering the shed ease question I forgot to mention how adorable she in in the eating pics. She's beyond cute. Don't worry about phone pics. They are way better than no pics which is the alternative!

It looks that dead, that's a bummer it would have been amazing had Mira came out unscathed from her adventure, well I guess she's gunna have some battle scars :/

Thank you so much! She is a cutie. I'm also amazed at her temperament. Even after her 6th month adventure in the wild, she is still as docile as can be. She hasn't so much as rattled at me since her return. Perhaps she is grateful that her food now comes delivered?

It's interesting that her sheds ended up as bad as they did. I didn't know Oregon had such low humidity. However, I am just grateful that she's back with only a few scars and a stubby tail. It could have been much worse!

Mira gave me a perfect, albeit unusual shed. She ended up going back through the head of the skin! She's gaining weight slowly and is up to a modest 16 grams (from about 7 right after I caught her). Still small with a lot of catching up to do, but getting bigger. She's been healthy so far, with no regurgs. I'll post new post shed pictures soon, but in the meantime here's a picture of her interesting shed.

She's come full circle on her adventure. She's now back home! Quite a symbolic shed.

A couple belated post shed pictures. She looks great and her colors are really coming back.
