Progression

HEY! I'm new to this site. And I figured to start a progression thread.

This is my 'new' (have had her for a couple months now) baby Sweet-Pea. She is a DOLL! She eats well, sheds fine, and has never tried to nip at me or any one. (Even the people who handle her rough.) And according to where I got her, she is about 14-16 weeks old.

I don't know what Morph she is, so if any one knows, PLEASE feel free to tell me! I don't know what he parents were. I got her at PetSmart on a whim, because I missed my first snakes. (Had to get rid of them, SADLY) They only had her labeled as a 'Fancy Corn'... Yeah, they are REALLY specific there... I don't think I was charged to outrageously though... Hm.. oh well! lol

OH! And if any one has a Picture of a snake that she might look like when she is about a year old, PLEASE post them! THNX!!!!

Feeding Changes

I'm Pretty excited about this month. Even though the average Temp out side is about 43 degrees, SweetPea hasn't slowed down, and I've even had to step up her feeding... She eats every three days, but I'm starting to think that even THAT isn't enough Due to the way she acts after a meal. It takes her under a minute to have downed the entire pinky, and swallow it to where it stops, then she keeps looking for more. ANd when I reach in (from the side) to pick her up and put her back, she acts like my hand is next on the menu. She still has NOT tagged me (Thank GOD), but, I have to step up her feeding again.

Tomorrow I'm going shopping, and taking the opportunity to pick up some small fuzzies. Since she is my only snake, i can only really afford to get her F/T... Though at SOME point, I would like to try feeding her live... Eventually.

BTW, She shed last week. But my Camera is *cough* Dead *cough*... So, we have to wait till the next shed to get some pics. It looked like it was going to be a messed up shed, because I accidentally forgot to UP her humidity when she went deep blue, but, I have it a good Spray, and she shed without any problem... ACCEPT...

A couple sheds ago, she couldn't get the dead skin of the last 1/4 inch of her tail. And when I tried, I was also Unsuccessful. It finally came off this shed, but now that little bit of tail is Black... Should I be worried? Or does this sort of thing just sometimes happen???

PS: She has turned a shade "Red-er" since her last shed... What will she look like NEXT year, I wonder quietly to myself!

ooh oow here come the tar and feathers...

If I AM doing something wrong, I would like to know so I can fix it

Okay i'm not the best person for this but i'll try.
First, if you get tagged by a corn that young it really isn't that big of a deal, most describe it as angry velcro.
Feeding every 3 days is way too much, normally a corn is fed every 5-7 days.
And as last don't feed live if you don't have to. Live rodents can harm your snake and even kill it and you don't want that. There are people that feed live anyway and have no problems but i don't see why to take the risk if your corn feeds on f/t mice.

If anybody can think of something else, please say so.

All I know is that I need to move her up to something bigger so I can feed her less often.

Probably, the rodents should be 1.5 times the size of the biggest part of the corn. And if you can't see the lump after 24 hours give them something bigger. (next week that is, not after the 24 hours)

Rather than feeding every 3 days, maybe she is ready for 2 pinkies every 5 days? Do you have a scale you can weigh her with?

oh, and regarding the shed... it happens and the black part is dead. It will eventually fall off. Just keep an eye on it to make sure the black doesn't spread upwards or that once it falls off, it doesn't get infected.

In the future, if there's a bad shed that leaves skin on, try using a warm wet washcloth and letting her wriggle through it to loosen it on her own. You can also use a wet q-tip to gently work at the leftover shed as well.

THANK YOU for your helpful info regarding feeding! I honestly feel loads better, and more comfortable giving her something bigger, and feeding her less.

And I also feel better about her tail. -Relieved sigh- When it first happened I gave her a warm soak for 5 minutes, then lit her wriggle through a warm washcloth, but to no effect. But I'm happy knowing it happens, and it's nothing to super panic over.

Thank you again!

You're welcome. I'd definitely invest in a digital scale to track her weight. I'm not sure she'd be ready for a fuzzy just yet, but if she's still THAT hungry, she's probably ready for two pinks.

Also, you may want to wait longer for her to digest her first item before handling her. Most members here seem to wait at least 20-30 minutes after their snake is "done" eating before moving them back to their cage.

It's good to worry about the shed, but unless it gets worse, it's nothing to panic over. Sometimes it takes a few soaks to get it loosened up, but usually you can get it off before it constricts and causes the lower portion to go necrotic and die off.
