Purchasing snakes/health guarantees

Wilder

Y HALO THAR
Just thought of another question while reading around online. Most places you can order a snake from state their health guarantees on the website, which is nice, but what if you are buying the snake at a reptile show? Can you expect a health guarantee there, too? Also, do all breeders include shedding/feeding records? I'm assuming it's better to purchase a snake from someone that has them for their snakes, since it shows more individual care. But I don't know for sure. :) Do I expect paperwork with the snake or no?

If you purchase at a show, it depends on the breeder, but I've rarely seen feed/shed records offered and many have no guarantees. You won't know until you ask. If you buy from many of the big breeders, they do have a health guarantee, but usually won't have feeding records other than that it's a feeder or not. Some smaller breeders will offer feed/shed records, you just have to ask around. I'd say, especially at a show, that getting feed/shed records is the exception, not the norm.

I take a different approach to my feeding records. Since I have so many snakes, I only record the bad things, like refusing to eat, or having shedding problems or the dreaded regurge. I don't see the point of recording each and every meal that a snake eats if you feed them on a regular basis. There is no information there that you can look back on for any reference. Medical problems and treatments, hatch dates, copulation and laying dates and brumation dates are something that you can look back on for future reference.

I really do not see the need to record shed dates, except for the first shed after coming out of brumation and subsequent sheds during the breeding season. I do record things like copulation dates and egg laying dates but that is about it.

The snakes that are doing the best for me only have their hatch date, sex and number, which I can look up their parentage with on their lids and nothing else. The ones with a long list of magic marker comments on their lids are my trouble snakes.
