Police say a 2-foot-long ball python slithered its way into an Illinois apartment and wrapped itself around the foot of a sleeping 1-year-old boy and bit him on his left foot. Mattoon Police Department Deputy Chief Jason Taylor said the boy's parents were awakened by the child's noises to find the snake attacking their son about 11 p.m. Monday, the Mattoon Journal-Gazette & Times-Courier reported. The father, Devin Winans, used a blanket to pull the python off the child, and his mother took the boy to a health center for treatment of a bite mark, bruise and scratches, the newspaper reported. “It was definitely something we never thought of happening. It was definitely really scary,” the child's mother, Sara Lacey told the newspaper. She said it was the first time she has seen the python and the apartment building is supposed to be pet-free.
Investigators believe the python escaped from a neighboring apartment within the building, Taylor said. Police have not been able to find the owner.
He said the snake’s owner could face charges for having an animal at large, according to the newspaper.
The snake is being held at the Coles County animal shelter. http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...apartment?lite

Mattoon police locate owner of python that bit infant in adjacent apartment
MATTOON — The owner of a 2-foot-long python that entered an apartment Monday evening and bit a 1-year-old boy has been cited for allowing an animal to run at large.
The Mattoon Police Department reported that the city ordinance citation against Shelby C. Guyette, 23, resulted from an incident that occurred at 11 p.m. Monday in an apartment in the 300 block of North 22nd Street. The ball, or royal, python wrapped itself around the boy’s leg and bit him on the foot.
Deputy Chief Jason Taylor, who issued a news release, said further investigation revealed the snake was apparently owned by Guyette, who lived in an adjacent apartment. He said Guyette did not have a secure terrarium, which enabled the snake to make its way into the neighboring apartment. Guyette is scheduled to appear in court.
The infant’s father, Devin Winans, told police that he was awakened about 11 p.m. Monday by his son making noises, and he subsequently discovered that the snake was wrapped around the boy’s left foot.
Sara Lacey, the infant’s mother, said Winans used a blanket to pull the python off of their son, William. She then took the infant to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment of a bite mark, a bruise and scratches. She has said her son stayed calm during most of the ordeal, never crying until his wounds were cleaned.
The python was turned over to the custody of the Coles County animal shelter, which has an aquarium tank regularly used for temporarily housing abandoned reptiles and amphibians. http://herald-review.com/news/local/...9bb2963f4.html

bad owner making the rest of us look bad. cage clips or sliding/locking lids are not a big deal and easy to use.

I agree, a very careless owner! He should be lucky it wasn't any worse for the poor child.

Wonder if the snake hadn't been well fed, either? Doesn't sound like something most typical BPs would do, if they were well fed.

Better to have constricted the poor kid's leg than its neck. When you read a story like this you expect the culprit to be the ever-demonized Burm, or one of the giant snakes. But a bp?? How odd. I read with great interest a thread on another forum where people were passionately debating the level of "danger" a bp posed to people, and all but one or two people agreed that balls are perfectly safe. My niece had mentioned before she'd never want her child in my house if I got a python... I did get one. But unlike the dufus responsible for this incident, I'm very careful about keeping its terrarium securely locked.

I'd guess the local authorities will now get the ball rolling on some sort of reptile ban to appease a panicked community. :/

Very surprised that the child didn't cry when bitten. I've been nipped by a BP and it jolly well made me yelp! They're a good deal stronger than a Corn when they want to object to something. Can't help wondering if there's been a little embroidery to this story?

This is being discussed at length on the BP forum and most of us smell "tuna."

Lot's of things don't add up in that story.

OMG the poor thing! It looks like he did have horrible care. Ive been bitten by a bp that small and it does hurt but its nothing to write home to my mom about.

I smell tuna as well BB. While its a baby that is a baby bp as well.

Of course that ball python attacked that child! Don't you know snakes are evil and out to get us all? They should all be banned! They belong in zoos! You'd never ever hear of a dog attacking someone!!! :headbang:
