Qquestion on log hide

I have three different hides in my terrarium, but the one my young female corn (32 gms) spends almost all of her daytime hours in is a hollow log. The log is about 4" in diameter and 13" long.

The problem is that when I want to get her out for feeding or exercise or cage cleaning, it is very hard to get her to come out of the log. I remove the log into a separate container, but she never comes out on her own, and i end up having to sort of prod her out (very gently) with a rubber spatula. I think that this stresses her out, and I know it stresses me out.

I can always remove it and replace it with another type of hide, but like I said, it seems to be her favorite.

Thanks for any suggestions.

How old is the snake? By the way you're describing it, I think you're refereing to a young snake?.. It is normal for young snakes to hide most of the time. They think the world is out to get them, so they just hide a lot.
And why a rubber spatula? I'm sure if the snake bit you, it wouldnt hurt at all.
As the snake gets older, they'll learn to come out on their own knowing it is in a safe environment. and If that is the snakes favorite hide, then just keep it there. That is where it feels safe.
Just continue to feed the snake normally and hold the snake regularly (Except when feeding) and it will get more comfortable with its surroundings

I use a rubber spatula because it is soft. I would be happy to use my hand, but the opening is only 3" in diameter and my hand will not fit inside.

Could you cut the log in half, and then find a way to rejoin it? But you'd be able to open it up when you needed to.

Or, if she likes that, she would probably love a paper towel tube. yes, I know they are ugly and not natural but snakes LOVE them. They are slick inside, though, so the snake is not usually too hard to dislodge.

Yeah it's better if you can get your hand inside whatever hide you have. I like Nancy's idea of cutting it in half, if you could :)

I had the same problem with my girl hiding in a fake rock, since I knew it stressed her out to come out of there I pulled it out and I replaced it with a low lying piece of cotton wood bark. She sits there all the time just like her other hide. As long as the hide makes them feel secure then it's a good hide. I definitely like the idea of cutting the log in half and maybe using velcro to put the two sides back together. So you're not really changing her hide, but you are making it accessible to yourself, while still making her feel safe.

Thanks for the suggestions. They were very helpful

I ended up cutting the bottom 1/4 off the log so it in a "C" shape and put it back in the terrarium in the same location. She moved back in within a couple of hours and is all curled up inside it right now.

Quote of the year. Hahaha.

I hope everything worked out for you though. I know how sort of frustrating it can be when you have a pet that hides a lot. Try having scorpions. Those guys never come out of their hides. :p
