Question about Frozen mice

Cora

OK, so a friend and I ordered about $400. in various mice from a supplier on line. the mice took 2 days by mail to reach us and a lot got defrosted.
I was wondering if I should chuck the whole order or can I still use the mice that aren't bloody and didn't get defrosted? and if I do use them what kind of shelf life will they have?

anyone had this experience and know?

dont they guarantee a frozen order when it arrives? If it didnt arrive frozen and they guarantee it i would let them know about it. I dont know if it would be a good idea to re-freeze them though, Maybe if they were still pretty cold it would be ok, but if they hit room temp already i probably wouldnt.

I haven't had that happen to me, as I've only ordered online once, but the first thing I would do is get in contact with the supplier, because the mice shouldn't have thawed. The common practice is to ship with dry ice, which obviously didn't happen. I'd ask for a refund for all the mice.

As to your question, I wouldn't use any of them just to be safe, but I'd wait for more responses on this.

Normally furred prey can be refrozen with few problems. If they smell bad or rotten I would definetly tally them up and inform the supplier.

The fact that others were still frozen tells me that they arrrived thawed but cold still. Pinkies and fuzzies are notoriously hard to keep frozen (due to lack of mass) ... thus the reason that they are susually sold in 50-100 qty's.

Pinkies and fuzzies when thawed 2 times tend to "pop" when they get constricted. Not necessarily bad for the snake but that means you get to clean up entrails from one side of the cage to the other.

Dry Ice ... There are many resaons why dry ice wont last the whole shipment. Heat, altitude, size of blocks used, and how airtight the shipping container is.

I ship in 1.5" closed cell foam medical chests. They have interlocking lids and are then taped around the seam between body and lid ... and all seams on the box are taped. 5 lbs of dry ice will only last for about 18 hrs. Most shipments need to go "air mail" dry ice sublimates alot faster in high altitude.

This is all info I have gleaned through trial and error.

I am waiting to hear back from the supplier to see what will happen.
The smallest mice we ordered where Hoppers and the bag I have I would say 1/2 are bloody from being defrosted. The adult mice dont look so bad so hopefully they are good and I will try to use them. luckly I have a lot of mouths to feed and wont be keeping the mice in the freezer for long.

I am not sure the exact shipping because they were sent to my friends house but I understand that they came in a strafoam chest.

Hopefully it is a lesson learned in keeping things frozen and maybe finding a new postal way to ship!

I would definitely ask for a refund. I've ordered from three different rodent suppliers and have never had anything thaw on me. Not even the box that was left on my porch in direct sunlight in the middle of August. I'd also recommend using a different supplier.
