Question about hatchling size

Well I got a new cornsnake yesterday. This will be my second corn but its my first time taking care of a baby snake. I was just wondering if its even big enough to eat a pinky? Its about 8-9 inches and about as wide as a pencil. Any thoughts?

You'd be surprised what a hatchling can eat! The general rule of thumb is to select mice (pinkies, in this case) approximately one and a half times the widest part of the snake (other than the head).

If you're that concerned, you could always try your new baby on halves of pinkies. If it does well (note, it might take a few feedings for your snake to figure out the easiest/fastest method of downing it's dinner) for say... two feedings? One for each half of the pinkie? And there is no noticable lump after 24 hours, try a whole pinkie.

F/T. There's no reason for him not to take it, as long as you have the pink hot- 101-103F.

It's a good idea to let new snakes settle in for a week with no handling, then feed, then two days of no handling to digest, THEN finally you get to handle the snake. Some snakes get upset by the change in living arrangements, and can associate feeding with this, so it's best to let them settle in completly and get established eating before doing anything to stress them.

Ok thanks Nanci! The breeder I got her from doesn't have pinkies yet so I'll just get them next week.
