Question about Odor

Hope this is the right place to put this!!

I am having a problem with odor in my vivs. I have glass vivs, and use the indoor/outdoor type carpet...But even after I wash the carpets, clean the glass and everything in the vivs, I still smell an odor...Is there anything I can do???

I thought of buying some of those car fresheners (the little trees) and putting in the vivs...(joke!!!!!)

Please if anyone has some ideas, would really appreciate it!!!

Wash the enclosure with white viniger and get a new piece of carpet (they can hold in smells after time no matter how much you wash it), or use newspaper/papertowel or apsen shavings (which will reduce odors). There are also some safe products out there used to clean and eliminate odors in reptile cages.

I used to have three pet rats and let me tell you, carpet, while easy to use, isn't so good because, as someone mentioned, it will smell no matter how much you wash it. Have you ever seen steamcleaned carpet from a house with puppies? Underneath it is still horrible. I would recommend either changing the pieces more often (if you weren't doing this already) OR (and I recommend this one the best) just use another substrate. I went to carefresh for my rats and it worked great, and I use aspen for my snakes and most other of my reptiles.

Also, maybe the humidity in your viv is too high. Moisture can really bring out the bad smells in carpets (due to the wetness and/or the mixture of urine and feces). Hope this helps you a little.

Opps, guess I didn't make myself clear...The carpet isn't the problem, as I change those VERY regularly...The smell is there even when there is NOTHING in the viv!!

On the vineger, do I use it straight, or mixed with water?? And does anyone know the names of safe cleaners/odor products and where I can find them???

Thanks!!

Okay, are you only using water to clean the viv because I can also tell you from my rat days that it won't do much and over time the smell (caused by bacteria I believe) will still build up. Most care sheets for most snakes and reptiles recommend the use of a 1-2% bleach solution when cleaning vivs. I used antibacterial soap for my rat cages and they both kill the smelly bacteria. Are you using any of these or just water, cause if it is just water then I think that would definitely be the problem.

If you are using a cleaner than you truly have my mind boggled as to what could be causing the problem. :shrugs:

Using a bleach solution on the carpets, and that seems to do okay with the odor in the carpets....Using a cleaner on the vivs, which is why I too was stumped as to the odor....Yes the cage smells when it is completely empty, after I clean it...Will try the vinegar and see what happens....

Thanks,

Okay, are you cleaning all the other stuff also, like the hideouts, decorations and all that because they also gather lots of smelly stuff that can pack a punch.

Other than that I got nothing.
