Question about racks

I was thinking about building my own rack system so i can buy some more corns without taking up a bunch of room with tanks. I know that its better for them to have belly heat for digestion but when I'm reading here in the forums about racks everyone says they use the heat tape on the back of their racks. Do they still digest the same with the tape on the back or is there a trick on putting the tape under the containers in the rack?

Thanks, Daniel :shrugs:

back/belly heat

I have commercially made racks; one has belly heat (flexwatt that sits in a wide groove on bottom of each shelf) and one has back heat. It probably does not make all that much difference, but I just like belly heat better.

My problem with back heat is that the element has to run hotter longer to achieve the same temps as opposed to it being directly under the tub. All my racks use belly heat now.

It probably does take a bit more heat to get the temps in the cages up using back heat, but I've never had a problem with it. In fact, I just built a new rack last night and will be using back heat on it. Plus, the way I see it, is using back heat might be easier in most cases. You don't have to worry about the cages constantly rubbing over the tape/cable each time they are slid in and out OR You don't have to bother with routing out a "trench" for the heat cable to lay in so that the tubs don't rub.

I have commercially made racks and they have back heat.
I would have preferred to have belly heat but the person, that I purchased from (and still do purchase from ;) ), does not offer belly heat for his racks.
However, that said, the back heat seems to work out just fine.
No digestive problems, etc., with my snakes. All (from hatchlings to adults) are doing great.:) If they are doing great, I'm happy.

so where do you find commercially made racks? I'm sure they are more expensive than homemade and most likley out of my price range. But still curious.

Back Heat = 16qt & smaller
Belly Heat = Anything larger

The above is what is really important. I don't believe someone should just make a blanket statement about back or belly heat is best. It depends on the size of the tub!

If you Google "Reptile Racks" you will find a whole lot of cage/rack builders. You can also look on Kingsnake.
