Question about thermostat

Hello I'm new to the whole cornsnake thing. I'm getting my butter cornsnake on Sunday. My question is about the probe on the thermostat. I read that you put it on top of the glass under all the aspen right? Well if cornsnakes like to burrow wouldn't they move the probe around?

Thanks, Daniel

Just fix it down with some blue tack, or put something heavy on top of it like a rock or piece of wood, I use blue tack!

Or you could use aquarium silicone. You just don't want to use tape- your snake will get it on him. It's better to have it loose than use tape.

Aquarium silicone eh? Not A bad idea....thanx! :spinner: Is that what you use on yours? Also do you know about how long it takes to dry?

I second the suggestion to use silicone/glue, or you can use hot glue as long as it isn't hot enough to melt the wires. Or else find a suction cup that you can attach it to, like many of the thermometer probes have.

You don't want to leave it loose because if the snake moves it completely off the heat source, the temps will go too high.

Another option would be to tape it (use aluminum tape) on the bottom of the UTH, outside the viv. Just be sure to give it some time to stabilize the temps and make sure it is working before you put the snake in.

It takes no longer than overnight to dry. Better get going!!

Some of mine are unsecured, but pinned down by heavy hides. Not optimal, not recommending that.

Yeah, best spot for the stat probe would be under the bottom of the tank right on the UTH. Then the thermometer probe goes on top of the substrate so you can regulate properly. Usual difference between the UTH temp and substrate temp I've been told is about 2-5 degrees, so if you get the meter to read 85, the mat itself is probably no higher than 90. I learned this through MANY discussions with snake cage builders and breeders...not an expert in any way. :)

I just hold it down using a hide. It's not convient for me to affix it as it will have to be moved during cleaning.

FYI previous poster your sig is 2 lines too long.
