Question re. shipping to Fedex office rather than door

I don't have any specific animal/breeder in mind, so this is a pretty general question.
Up here in Canada I seem to be out of range for most breeders in the US. There certainly aren't many breeders that will ship across the border. There are, however, a number of US Fedex locations across the water in washington state that I could hop on a ferry to get to.
I've noticed a lot of breeders with guarantees that are only valid if the recipient is home at the time of delivery. If I were at the courier office at the time of arrival would this count?
Has anyone here picked up an animal from a courier office or shipped an animal to such a location instead of the actual customer?

If it's viable it would open me up to a lot more potential animals to purchase.

I've shipped to people that wanted the box held at the fed ex for them before.
It's pretty easy, on the shipping label you just check the box where it says hold at fed ex location, and then put that address in the place where the recipient's address would go.
If you need to see where the locations are and find the most convenient one you can go on fedex.com and search, I am however not sure what other steps to take to then legally get the snakes into Canada. There are Canadian members here that could probably help you if you pm them though :)

I've received a couple of animals this way. In fact, during the hot summer, I think it's preferred by all concerned, because then the animals aren't out on the truck without climate control. I haven't worried about the live-arrival guarantee in those situations, because the odds of having a problem are so slim it didn't really occur to me. The pick-up location is supposed to call you when they get your shipment in so that you can go pick it up. I suppose if you live far enough away, you might as well be there when their packages come in. Mine is only 10 minutes away, so it's not a concern.

Yep, I've shipped a couple boxes for people in Canada to be held right across the border, then they bring the animals in themselves. Worked well for me and my customers. I encourage animals to be held at Fed Ex stations anyways, less time to be jumbled around in truck!

Virtually ALL my Canadian customers get them there...

I have shipped to FedEx on the US side for at least 8 or 10 Canadian customers over the last few years - east coast, west coast, and in between. I also try to get my US customers to pick up at their local FedEx whenever possible. The package is there before the sun comes up (usually), no long trucking times, and very unlikely to get lost, mis-delivered, or left out in the sun or snow. Pick up at the local FedEx office is the safest, fastest route for live reptiles shipped via FedEx.

So far, none of my Canadian customers ever had a problem bringing corns back across the border, as long as they are for personal pets and not for commercial purposes. Some localities want it listed on the invoice that the snakes have been at the breeder's facility since hatching, or for the last 90 days.

MANY of my packages for "Hold for Pick-Up" at the FedEx location, and almost every single package we get arrives to us that way. It is safer, SLIGHTLY cheaper, and saves a lot of "driving around in the truck" time. Most breeders that ship Delta have a policy that the snakes must be picked up within 4 hours of arrival, and we follow the same rules with "Hold For Pick-Up" deliveries. Since it is safer to do a "HOLD" than home delivery, it is silly for someone to NOT guarantee ones shipped that way.

To be honest, I'd make all my customers pick them up at the FedEx office if I could!!!!

Thanks everyone. This is quite reassuring for my hopes of getting some more uncommon animals in the future!
