since im fairly new at snakes...i just have a couple questions....i have a LOT of neices and nephews that visit very often(a 3 month old a 3 and a 4 year old and a 7 year old,and once in a while a 1 year old) and i was just wondering...my snakes only say a foot in a half long right now and about as thick as a quarter(USA 25 cent coin) is wide would he be at all dangerous to any of them? lately the 3 and 4 year olds have been wanting to hold him and im worried because if he ever gets out the babys crib is like right outside my door and hed have absolutely no problem getting in it(if he ever escapes...had em for 2 months now and he hasnt escaped yet, duct tape hinges seem to work ) also how big will he grow to be length/width wise ive heard of some getting to be like 6 feet and as big around as a can of soda! plus i saw one about 3 inches across at the pet store one day...was pretty snwy wite one( if so i pray to god he never gets mad at me then ) but yea if anyone could clear up these questions id be greatful...im not sure exactly how hard he can squeeze but from what hes done to my arm when i first got him he seems like hed be pretty tough for a little one to hold and not start flipping out
Most likely the children will pose more of a danger to the snake than the other way around! I have had a snake strike @ my daughter's arm when she was younger (7-8 yrs) it doesn't hurt but it was a bit scary for her- could be dangerous if they struck at the face. Still don't know why that snake struck her- it was kinda grumpy anyway :shrugs:
If you don't feel comfortable- wait till they are older or you hold & they "pet" the snake.
Corn snakes generally do not get that big, considered a medium snake which would max out @ 6 feet or so & that would be big, most are probably much smaller than that... it sounds like the snake @ the pet shop might have been a boa or python.
good luck!
btw- you might want to get better hinges than tape
My neighbor kids all hold the snakes. I've never had a problem. The only thing they need to do is wash their hands thoroughly afterward as snakes can harbor salmonella.
