Question....

Andrzej

Reptiles is my AntiDrug!
I just got a pair of corn snakes. One is a Snow male, and the other is a anery female. I was wondering if i could breed them this year, but theres a little problem. They are a bit skinny and underweight. When i got them, the guy told me that the were fed only one a month. so my question is should i wait untill ill get some more weigh on them or if i should just breed them right now?

Yes, you should definitely wait. Not only until they've put on some decent weight, but wait until you know what weight they actually are. "Bit skinny" could have several definitions to several different people. I'd also suggest doing your homework BEFORE breeding instead of during or after. Kathy Love's books are a must have, follow them to the letter to begin with and make changes AFTER you've gained the experience.

Good luck,

For a female to successfully breed it's usually suggested that she be 3 ft long, 300 grams and at least 3 years old...anything smaller and there could be risks involved...

Breeding underweight corns is a sure-fire way to ask for problems, including the death of the female. They are not in any condition to be bred this year and you should get them into the best condition possible before attempting to breed them.

Females often stop eating once they are gravid. So trying to fatten her after breeding may not work. Underweight females don't always ovulate. So breeding may not be possible. It's just a bad idea in general. Wait until they are ready then everyone will be happy.

ok. Thanks for the info. Shes around 2.5ft and shes like 5+ years old. thats what the guy told me, and im sure she is under 300 grams. So i dont think im going to breed her untill shes ready and im ready. Thx for all the help.

Don't think it... just don't do it. There is nothing to think about to be honest the question should not have been asked in the first place. Would you make a 45 year old who weighs 85 pounds give birth? I pray your answer is no. Why would you force an underweight female to go through breeding and laying eggs?

It's attitudes like this that give this place a bad name. He already said he wasn't going to. What's wrong with asking for advice from people with more experience and knowledge?? Chill out.

Like Duff Said! Im not going to breed her right now, im going to wait another year or two untill ill breed her, so i can get some weigh on her. I fed her yesterday and she ate two mice, and the male ate one mice and i gaved him a hopper that my savi didnt eat. Im glad that they are eating good. Both of the corn snakes have very good eating habits, when i fed them like a min or two the mice was gone. Thanks for all the help and info.
