So I am in college for marketing and I have to create a hypothetical business plan. I figured for fun I would write one on breeding but I don't know much about the industry since I am still new in just owning a corn. From what I have learned so far is that it must be a hobby more than a business to be successful.

Can someone give me some insight to the industry?
Are there certain licenses or fees that need to be paid since it can be considered a business?

What I have so far for my sample plan is the location (Minot, ND) the idea of selling wholesale to local pet shops.

I don't know anything about American Business but I do know a bit about breeding..
It can be a business and not a hobby IMO, but it tends to be the other way around as it always starts as a hobby..
As for selling, wholesale to pet shops is not the way to go (unless you are a big breeder and you want to off load all your normals, or suspected hets in certain circumstances)
If you buy in at the top end and with the right animals you can produce valuable animals that will sell..
If you buy in, you will need to buy in every year and or experiment yourself to stay ahead of the game..
If you know a bit about genetics and are willing to keep back animals, you could make a first and as long as it's attractive and can be reproduced will sell (or it's genes do wonderful things to other combo's)
Get your name out there, at shows. forums etc and really nice pics help sell any snake..
Wholesale is too much like hard work... The amount of baby corns I would need to support my life style makes it easier to go and do a proper job...
Not that I don't have a proper job, or breed thousands of snakes... Just saying LOL

Haha, thanks for the insight! I hadn't thought of the amount of snakes needed to sell wholesale so I am glad you brought that up!

The man you need to ask is the owner of this site, Rich Zuchowski (user: Rich Z). He actually made a living breeding corn snakes (SerpenCo) and just recently retired. Shoot him a PM and maybe he'll give you a quick rundown on what it was really like.
