Quick heating question...

zapthycat

I'm a Daddy!!!
Hey guys,

This is probably a new question, but I'd like to know.

I live in Northern California, which isn't really a bad climate, but the winters can sometimes get into the 30's. For this reason, I will need a source of heat for my corn. I really don't have money for a UTH or heat lamp at this time :(

I have a heat rock, but I have seen in the FAQ's that those are NOT recommended because they can cause burns on the poor snake, who's trying to get warm but can't find a happy medium.

My question is this: Can I put some sort of porous covering on the rock, that will allow the snake to get on the rock and receive heat without touching it? I'm thinking specifically of like a crocheted blanket that I can wrap around or put over the top of the rock, that way the corn would get direct heat from the rock, but without the burns of a solid surface against it's bare skin.

Would this be a good idea? Input please...!

I guess that is start, but you have to remember that the snake is going to want to get under that blanket. It is dark and warm. If you can find away to manage good heat and keep it safe it would work. It seems to me that the $10 it would cost for a small UTH would be worth the trouble and problems it might save you from. Then again i don't know your financial circumstances.

I would read the cautions on the rocks packaging first! Mine specifically says NOT to cover it with anything, as this could start a fire. (Mine is an exo-terra (hagen) reptile rock) But I agree with Manog, UTHs are inexpensive (even in Canada $14.99 for the smallest exo-terra one) and there is WAY less chance of your snake getting burned =)

You can't afford to get a heat lamp for $10-$15?

I'd assume buying materials to cover the hot rock would be just as costly, if not more. Spend the $15 and buy yourself a UTH or a red heat bulb.
