Hello everyone ^^

I've never owned a snake before, but I just got a baby corn on Saturday at a ReptiCon in Orlando, FL. I'm really excited...she's so cute. I named her Isis. :D Normal coloring, but I love her anyways.

Anyways, I was just wondering how long after feeding can I handle her safetly again?

She just ate an hour or 2 ago-- frozen thawed pinkies. It went successfully and now she's got a cute lump in her belly. XD;

Also are there any specific temperature conditions for her when she's digesting?

I've been told several different things, so I'm not 100% sure. I don't have any heating devices in her cage right now, but my room is usually fairly warm (about 75 F).

Any advice is appreciated~ Thanks so much! ^^
 
I like to give my snakes 3 days to digest before handling them. Some say two days, but I have had snakes still able to regurgiate at 3 days after eating.

As for the temps, I have a heat mat on one side which is at a constant 82-84 degrees, with the cool side around 75. I think you should be fine with that temp as most of my snakes tend to stay on the cool side, even for digesting. But I am in Colorado where it tends to cool down for winter, so maybe some folks from Florida will chime in and say if they need a heat mat or not for the winter.

I <3 her. She's a cutie, and she's very sweet-- a bit jumpy sometimes when i go to take her out, but I guess that's to be expected.
 
One more thing-- her tank is about 1' x 6" (one of those "Critter keeper tihngs...advertised for reptiles. :p)...From what I've been reading it seems like I may need a bigger tank, but the person I bought her from (a breeder) said that she'd be fine in that size tank.

She's still really small and seems to have plenty of room to move around; although more of her time is probably spent curled up. Then again, i haven't really had her long enough to judge how active she is, since she was probably pretty stressed on saturday.

That'll do for now, but you will eventually need a bigger tank for her. A 20 long is the minimum recommended size for an adult corn.
 
20 long? as in 20 inches, or 20 gallons?

i'm already considering putting her in a 5.5 gallon tank, because the heater i bought only works with glass, and my room is usually only about 75 degrees...
 
20 gallons. You can find one with a sliding screen top at Petco or Petsmart, when you're ready.

Florida last night where I live got down to 37F, a record low! My guys are all holed up in their warm hides, although I don't think the temp inside got below 68F.

I just bought a UTH for her but it turns out that it's for glass tanks only...and the Petsmart I went to only had that brand of heater, so I guess I'll be going back and getting a glass tank. D:

She just ate yesterday and I'm worried about it not being warm enough for her to digest properly....I've tried to warm up a towel and stick it under there but it doesn't really last. :x

Any ideas?
 
You can use the uth with a plastic container if you attach the uth to a piece of glass and then place that under your critter keeper. I use that for my rubbermaid containers and have never had a problem.
 
Unfortunately I don't have anything glass that I can put there...I guess I'll just have to wait and buy a glass tank tomorrow, and hope she doesn't regurge the pinkie. :shrugs:
 
Well I have a tile that might work but unfortunately i read the instructions for the heater and it says that once it's in place it shouldn't be moved(it's like a sticker, i guess, with a peel-off backing)...I really don't want to have to buy another heater. I plan on going tomorrow to get a 5.5 gallon glass tank-- should she be okay until then?
 
I'm sure she'll be fine until tomorrow, but the sooner you get the bigger tank, the better. On the hot side of the tank, it should be around 85 degrees, and on the cool side, it should be about 75. Maybe you can get one of those heat things that are supposed to warm your hands? Do you know what I mean? The coals ( I think) that are warm and come in a little cloth/paper pouch. Those are pretty warm, and it's probably better than nothing.

You'll probably be able to peel it off the tile. Are they ZooMed? That's what I've had, and I've peeled them on and off of stuff a few times.

Becky means 20 gallons long, as a minimum. For me, I think that's way too small. My snakes are all in 3'x1'x1' vivariums. I've heard it said, though, that a snake's viv should be as long as 2/3 the length of it's body, and as wide as 1/3 the length of it's body. I'm not sure if it's true, though.
 
I wouldn't take it off the tile. Use it with the tile on whatever cage you have. Just place the tile under the tank and use it forever. If you change tanks..no problem, just place the new tank over the tile. I no longer stick uth's to the bottom of the tank. If you ever break one while cleaning or you go to a new size, you can't use the heater anymore. If it's on a piece of glass or tile, you can move it where you want, and use whatever you want.
 
okay, thanks for the tips, guys. I discovered that the tile i found is for the kitchen (it goes under hot pots :x) so I can't use it. I'll go to Petsmart today and see what all I can get that'll work better...maybe I can stop by Home Depot too and get a sheet of glass...hmm..

I have one of those dollar stores near me and I buy a couple of those 8 X 10 picture frames for a buck a piece and take the glass out of that. Works great and it's cheap.
 
Okay, I got myself a 5.5 gallon tank and then went to a craft store with a framing dept and got a piece of glass cut just a bit larger than the base of the tank, and it cost me a bit less than 4 bucks. :D hopefully now poor Isis won't need to be curled up for warmth all the time~

some people mount/tape their uth to the solo piece of glass so they can use it on other tanks. after you mount it to one tank, you will more than likely damage it trying to "peel" it off to move it. maybe this is why she bought it. :shrugs:
