Rack design

So today I have been working on making an easy cheap rack design. It doesn't include any heat or anything like that in the design yet.

Bassicly they are 3 different sizes of sterilite bins. And the rack is made out of 10 48" x 18" sheets of 5/8" melamine. every bin has a 1/8" space above it to make the bins move easily. I might end up putting spacers in between the bins for extra support but i'll have to see after I build it.

Anyway any questions and suggestions are welcome

thnx

Maybe a base frame to improve rigidity, provide a strong attachment point for the casters, and keep the bottom guys up off the floor??

Casters seem to cost more than you'd expect, and you need four at a time. We have one of those big-box furniture stores here in Colorado that sells a portion of it's furniture as assemble-yourself. They have a spare parts bin where I can get a matching set of four casters for like $2, which is incredible. It's worth a try if you have that sort of thing in your area.

The weight on that would be intense.
Would be amazing completed though, looking forward to seeing pics.

yeah, each 8x4 sheet seems to be 80 pounds. so because I pretty much use about 2 full sheets it should be about 160 pounds for just the wood on the rack.
I'll definitely try taking some pics when its done, but will still be more than a week before I have money to start. so be patient :p

@michieldewit, if you could, record what everything costs you, and the time spent.
You only live a few hours from me, if this turns out as good as the picture, I'd gladly purchase one off you as long as the price isn't extreme. I'm not handy enough to do this myself lol.

The design is basically exactly what I need for my corns, and carpets. Keep me posted!

I 345874235th the stacking idea.

My racks (5 total) stand around 3ft high and aren't exactly light. 4 of the 5 are 3ft high x 4 ft wide x 18 or 20 inches deep and are designed for the model of sterilites sold at Wal-Mart (though they've been recent redesigned shorter which has put a small kink in things!). Each rack has 5 shelves and 2 of the first 4 have been trimmed down to 3ft x 3ft due to shelves warping, the 2 remaining 4ft wides have been braced in the center, which now limits me to using either sweater boxes or blanket boxes and I can no longer use the 3ft long sterilites on those 2 racks. Those first 4 were made out of 1/2 inch melamine too. A couple years ago I made a 5th rack to support two 4x2x2ft Maxwell-Style cages (it's a green tree python thing...the cages). That rack is also 3 ft high, and as mentioned supports two 4x2x2ft cages. I used 3/4in melamine for that rack. It's MUCH more sturdy, but also that much more heavy. But, I can put any size 6in tall sterilite bin in it.

One thing I ALWAYS forgot when I make racks/cages is to notch the bottom back sides to account for carpet and floorboard molding to get the racks fully stable by allowing them to rest flush against the wall.

NEVER would have though to do that.. Makes complete sense.

I designed this rack based on the size of the bins they have for sale at walmart. So hopefully they will keep them for a long time :p

I already kinda made up my mind that I need some support in between the shelves, it would probably start hanging down if I didn't, Also I am planning on using the 5/8" boards so at least a bit more sturdy than the 1/2" you had. was also thinking about maybe putting a backing onto the rack and attach them to the shelves for extra support.

Notching the back is a good point. might even secure it to the wall, but I'll have to see when I get to that point.

I might be able to do this, as long as you can pick it up. I have a tiny car and there would be no way for me to deliver it in one piece. on the other hand I could take all the screws out and you could put it back together yourself. but than you might aswell make the whole thing yourself :p. Its really just 10 pieces of wood the exact same size screwed together.

anyway, i'll keep track of the cost for ya.

As much as I hate to say it, Kijiiji.
Also there are oodles (yes oodles.) of pet shops in hamilton and toronto, just a hop skip and a jump from you.

I'd give my left nut to live closer to Toronto for the snake opportunities.

yeah actually looking into getting a 2 year old snake from someone in toronto right now. looks like its gonna be a stripe
