Rat CD question

First, thanks to all who helped my husband(again!) with the hatchlings. we have 2 babies so far and the others are pipping away...

Now my question. Up to what size rat is it ok and humane to cervically dislocate? I've decided to switch from breeding mice to breeding rats. Our snakes are rather varied in size and i figured i could feed each snake an appropiately sized baby rat. I would also get more babies per litter...and the rats like to play more than my mice...deviating...sorry back to my question. So is cervical dislocation ok with babies that are basically large breeder mouse size?

For my own info

How do you perform cervical dislocation? I know what it is, just not the right way to do it.

i say my apologies, thank you's, and goodbyes to the mouse. Mouse on a napkin on a table, i place a ruler behind its skull with enough pressure to hold it in place. With a firm grip on the base of the tail, i pull, but not straight back and not straight up. You feel a couple of snaps and it's done.

I don't know that much about it, but as long as it remains effective and as long as you are using fresh killed, I can't think of any reason to stop using that procedure..

I just look at my adult rats and can't imagine how hard one would have to pull. But i'm dealing with 3week old rats at most. I'll start using CO2 if i must, i'd just rather not spend any more than i need to.

The AVMA panel says less than 200 grams for rats (and less than 1kg for rabbits). As long as you can make it quick, the size doesn't matter, really. By hand, most average to smaller framed people can do it under 200 grams, though.....as long as they know HOW to do it and don't play around in the process.

If you are strong enough and/or us a right "tool," you CAN actually do it on any size rat almost instantly.

Thank you for that info! And "small-framed" i am not, so if i can get over the cuteness of the babies, i'll be fine. thanks!
