Rat Snake bred to a Corn?

I love the corn snake and all the awesome available colors and patterns.. thing is, I want a bigger snake, with all the quality's of a corn.. I am about to purchase a 6ft albino Rat Snake! He's a big thick brute. Is it possible to breed him to my orange female corn and start to produce some size and color in a bigger snake?

From what I've read it is generally frowned upon to cross breed animals. The whole point of captive breeding is to prolong an otherwise vulnerable species who is threatened by disappearing habitat and the such. The scientist side of me would like to see what happens but as a professional ecologist I think it's a bad idea. Look into other species that already have the traits your looking for instead of trying to create a cross.

Just my two cents, also go utica!

I believe creamsicles are actually rat/corn crosses and haven't ever noticed they grew any bigger than an avaerage corn. I too am not a hybrid fan- sure they are interesting looking and there are penty of wild corns left, but in the wrong hands hybrids threaten an already established species in my opinion which I know isn't shared by everyone. Why not just get a king snake? They are a little bigger and tend to calm down fine with age.

What kind of ratsnake are you looking at? There are many. Corn/rat hybrids are not new. I have creamsicles which are a hybrid. Some people don't like the idea. I don't think you will get an appreciable change in size however. I think you will still be looking at around 5' maximum size.

If your "orange" corn is a creamsicle then it is already a hybrid(emori x corn cross) and I don't see any harm in it. It may not be first generation but it still carries rat blood. The rat snake and corn snake are related so...As long as you label them as hybrids. If it is a "normal" corn then I, personally would find a hybrid to mate with it. That's just me though. It's your choice and I would love to see the offspring either way. Good luck!

Well I posted a little late so I kind of repeated some of the things that others have said. I second what wade and danielle said, I also have a creamsicle and he isn't any larger than a normal corn. In fact, I think that he is a little on the small side. Anyway, good luck again.

thanks Bharmonika.. I'm heading to a reptile expo this sunday... I may just wait and see if there are any cool straight rat snakes there. I'm looking to get a light narrow saddled boa, and maybe an adult butter motley corn and lavender motley. We'll see about the rats.. hope they take credit.

i love the baird's rat snake, the orange coming in on the head like that is really awesome. I heard that they're a little more shy than the corns so I'm hoping to ask some pro's at the expo to see if that's really true or not.
