Recommend a good proportional thermo

Hi
I'm looking to purchase another proportional thermostat. I own one Helix but they are pricey not saying they arent worth it;)

But I've been looking at the Ranco and johnson ones..any recommendations from anyone? Also where did you purchase? I've always used Bean Farm for most of my needs but they only seem to carry the Helix ones.

This will be used for another rack system. Wired with flexwatt.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice :)

It wasn't on your list of ones you're looking at but I would recommend a HerpStat by Spyder Robotics (Spyder Robotics).

I bought mine directly from Dion.

A warning, they are a little pricey, but I feel it's money well spent.

Regards,
Steve

Thanks Steve! I actually looked into those but for the small scale i'm still on ..and If I dont hear good feedback on these others I will just purchase another Helix..I have had good luck with that one..just curious on the others if they are decent/reliable for the price.

I have a Herpstat and it works great. The base model is only about $104 at glkherp.com

FYI, Ranco and Johnson Controls thermostats are on/off type and not proportional. You can get them at reptilebasics.com along with flexwatt. Good vendor.

but for the small scale i'm still on

YIKES...I only have 1 snake, that's as small as it gets :)

I have heard that the quality of Helix thermostats isn't what it used to be. I certainly don't have any first hand knowledge of this, since I own a HerpStat, but this is what I have heard.

Steve

When I was looking at a thermostat, I went with the Helix after asking myself"
How many bins are in your rack? How much would it cost to replace the snakes in those bins? Divide $150 (for the theromstat and shipping) by 18 bins and it costs less than $8.50 per snake. :)

Thanks guys..yeah I use my helix on my large rack system but i'm looking at building a smaller one for show of a few special beauties more of a showcase piece so was curious if the others worked as well..Great to hear everyones opinions and I concur on the expense of the helix per my snakes it was worth it!

Thanks I will go read them ..and sorry about the herpstats.

I thought they only made the ones that went for $350 the pro series. I just looked around the site that was posted earlier and looking up some info on them now :)

Roy I can understand that after reading the other post..Oh I would just die if I lost my collection..they are my babies!! So it is looking like a herpstat will be ordered this week...I've had a few minor problems with my helix but it has mostly just been positioning problems with the probe..But as my collection grows I want the best for them..Now with that being said which of the herpstats do you all use?? Are you using the proseries ones? Or the more in expensive ones?
http://www.spyderrobotics.com/products/herpstat.html this ones isnt bad at $110

But this one may take some convincing of the hubby;)
at $319

I want the best for them

I lost my first snake and vowed to do everything within my power to make sure my second one thrived...that's why I went with Dion and Spyder Robotics.

Now with that being said which of the herpstats do you all use?? Are you using the proseries ones? Or the more in expensive ones?

I use a Herpstat II. I have one probe over my UTH on the glass controlling my warm side and the other probe in a corner on my cool side.

I will state that I need a ceramic heat emitter on my cool side to maintain the temperature at 75 degrees otherwise it would drop to the mid to low 60's during the winter months. This in and of itself wouldn't be all that bad...but I refer you back to my first point in this post :)

Since I am controlling two devices, that why I went with the Herpstat II. If all you need to do is control one device, a Herpstat would be sufficient.

I hope this helps.

Steve

I love my Helix. Been working flawlessly for two years now.
Helix is ok as long as you never get anywhere near their listed wattage max. I trust one for one large rack, but never for two again, even though it should be able to handle it.

Thanks for the reminder Dean!!!

I will add that both of the power outlets on my Herpstat II are rated for 700 watts each.

Steve

Well that is what I'm thinking of for down the road I just may invest in the proseries one sice I currently have one rack and plans to build another that has larger viewing area for my pretties..so it will leave me with room to grow..Thanks again for all the great advice and help!!

I have the Herpstat Pro. It's expensive, but has 4 outputs that can all be controlled separately. I have one heating the corn racks, one heating the ball python racks, then one doing corn incubator, and one doing ball python incubator. And I know that I don't have to worry about temps on any of these. And it's cheaper than buying 4 individual thermostats.

May be something to consider if you plan on expanding your collection down the road as it may be cheaper in the long run.

I have the Herpstat Pro as well and I love it. I also have a Helix but I've never put a serious load on it. The Herpstat Pro is not only consistant but very user friendly. The menu system it has makes it a breeze to edit all the settings. Mine controls the temps for 4 heat cables in 2 racks.
