Recommended Surge Protector?

I saved up my money and finally purchased Herpstat 1 Basic thermostats for my snakes. They are sweet! I read in the user manual that they recommend a surge protector as an added layer of safety. They said to get one rated for large flat panel TVs or computer equipment. Do any of you use one that you would recommend?

Woohoo, something I actually know a little about.

For a good surge protector get something rated at a minimum of 1000 Joules. I would recommend 2000+ though. Basically the rating is just how high of a spike they can handle without damaging your equipment.

We use these all over the office here. You might be able to find one smaller and cheaper, but 15 bucks is a fair price.

You know what I wish I knew, if you get a "whole house" surge suppressor from the power company, does it really work? My AC/heat pump got damaged by a lightning strike, and I asked the technician how could that be, I had surge suppressors on it, and he said no you don't, and I said, well when I bought it, I paid for them, so they fixed it and installed them for free...Now I see them glowing when I'm out in the yard at night. But I would really like to have a "whole house" suppressor, if it really helps (of course nothing helps in the event of a direct hit, which _did_ happen to my neighbor across the street in MN, twice!)

And I have most of my equipment, including thermostats, on big UPS's. The others are on surge suppressor strips.

UPS are actually great for sensitive electronics. The power in your home isn't as steady as one would wish, and a UPS cleans that up before sending it on to your devices. It's kinda like driving a car down a smooth road instead of a rough one. They also protect from surges and, of course, provide some power after the lights go out! I love em, but they're expensive compared to a surge protector.

Whole house surge protectors can protect against large surges coming from outside your house but they don't really do much for the more common smaller surges that pop your electronics or originate on the same circuit. Putting a decently rated surge protector on any expensive electronics is definitely still worth it.

I'm surprised your AC unit would go bad from a power surge, it takes a pretty big spike to take those down.

Thanks for the info. LazyLemming, what you recommended is much smaller than I was anticipating. I expected I'd have to get a big clunky thing. This one looks pretty svelte. :)

I have pretty unstable power out where I am. I was losing my rack temp monitoring all the time because the wifi would go out, and then not reset, till I put the base station on a timer and have it turn off and on twice a day to reset.
