red, irritated skin

I noticed that the skin around my boy's bum is red. it isn't swollen but it definitely looks irritated. as far as I can tell he is pooping just fine. I'm worried that it might turn into an infection.

what should I do? is it safe to use Vaseline?

Hi I've seen it used on lizards for shedding issues I can't see why not. just a very small amount . I'd give it ago if you don't have anything else.

Are you sure you're not just seeing pinkness from the underlying tissue, much the same way that hatchlings appear to have pink "cheeks," which is not actual coloration, but the color of the tissue beneath the scales?

Does the spot look particularly dry, or do you think it's a result from rubbing/chafing? The reason I ask is because I don't know if vaseline will really help otherwise. If it's some sort of dry spot, vaseline would definitely help moisten it, and if it's as a result of chafing, vaseline would also help protect it from growing further irritated.

it definitely looks like its on the outermost skin. there are a couple spots on each side of the valve.

What substrate are you using? Have you been away on vacation or in any way letting your cleaning routine slip? Are you disenfecting the tank regularly and keeping it dry?

I'm only asking the above to try to help. Overly moist and/or overly dirty substrates are going to be the most likely cause of a red, irritated underside on a reptile. Just trying to eliminate the obvious first...

My cleaning routine has slipped, that very well might be the problem. I will clean/disinfect his tank ASAP and hopefully that will clear it up.

Thanks everyone!
