a very long but interesting thread Darin. I have seen 'her' work here and there online.... i just try to avoid it ;) . I rally like how she said red-tails can get 9 feet in 2 years. Mine is almost 3 and is hardly 5 feet.

just a point...

How many times have you seen a beginner ask if they can feed their corn snakes crickets.
"Well, Melissa Kaplan said they could/would eat crickets."
I wonder where she gets her info?
It seems that there are serious flaws in quite a few of her caresheets.
I have kept turtles for years and there are so many times when people would come onto the turtle forums and quote misinformation from Melissa Kaplan as if it was gospil.
And of course, because my name wasn't "known" I was considered the antogonist for questioning her out-dated, ill conceived and sometimes dangerous advise.
I was always considered a novice because I couldn't answer questions about shell rot and eye absses and such.
It never occured to these Kaplanites that I wasn't up on medical care for my turtles because they were/are all healthy due to PROPER husbandry.
I seriously doubt she has kept even a small percentage of the animals she claims expertise about.
sorry to ramble
Just my 2 cents.

Jimmy, what turtle forums do you use? I have some RES, and I'd be interested in joining a forum. Thanks..

I appreciate that thread and read every bit. Very interesting information. But what do you advise we do? Other than not buy her books and steer people away from her "advice" and caresheets...

Wes,

I have a read a lot of stuff from MK that I doubted if she learned it by hands on experience. But in this case she is right.. A Boa can reach 9' in two years. Not likely but it is something you should considder when buying a Boa. I have had several Boa's in the past and none reached 9' ever. But right now I have a female that is a yearling and a tad bit under 6'. She might come close to reaching a recordlength since she is only growing length-wise right now. She is on no powerfeeding scedule btw.

In case you wanted to see her ;)
